Our History
History and Development (1976 – 2025)
The College of Administration & Economics was established on June 13, 1976, following Decree No. 9 from the 14th special meeting of the Higher Education Research Commission. Initially named “the College of Administration,” it was founded within the University of Sulaimaniyah province.
Teaching activities commenced in the Faculty of Administration during the academic year 1976-1982, with Statistics being among the subjects offered.
Following the relocation of the University to Erbil province in the academic year 1981-1982, significant developments occurred within the College. In the academic year 1988-1989, a new faculty, the “Faculty of Economics,” was established. This faculty was subsequently renamed the “Faculty of Administration and Economics.” Notably, the same academic year marked the establishment of a new department offering higher education (Master’s Degree) within this expanded faculty.
The Faculty of Accountancy was then established in the academic year 1989-1990. The College’s initial aim was to educate a new generation of professionals in the key areas of Administration, Economics, Accountancy, and Statistics.
The Master’s degree program within the Faculty of Accountancy faced a period of closure from 1992 to 1998 due to the withdrawal of administrative support by the Central Government of Iraq. Similarly, the Master’s degree program within the College of Administration & Economics was suspended between 1995 and 1998. However, following negotiations between the Dean’s office and the University leadership, the College resumed admitting Master’s students. Furthermore, in the academic year 1998-1999, the Faculty began offering a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree alongside the Master’s program.
To broaden access to higher education, the University introduced evening courses at the College of Administration & Economics in the academic year 2003-2004, and at the Faculty of Accountancy in the academic year 2004-2005.
