I have been trying to watch more new (to me) movies. I really like rewatching my favorite B movies because I know them well enough that I can still read (heh).

But, watched Dropbear (2025), which seemed at first really stupid, but then was pretty interesting by the end. Also, the main dopbear is a dude in a koala suit. And all but one of the koalas in the movie were either CGI or stuffed toys. But it works!

Also watched Apex (2026) on Netflix. Not bad. Somewhat creepy. Gorgeous scenery.

1. Is anything (minor or major) irritating you at the moment?

So many things. lol Lately I've been a bit more pessimistic than usual, which is annoying.

2. Have you ever used a photobooth? Are they still around where you live (where’s the nearest one?)

Used one of the older ones many years ago. Maybe in med school?

3. Do you still pay for things with cash? Have you been somewhere recently where they don’t take cash anymore?

At times, like restaurants where they charge you extra for using credit card (talk about annoying). Yes, MotoMedi doesn't take cash.

4. Is rain forecast for your area this week?

Currently raining. We absolutely needed it.

5. Have you learned anything new in the past year (a new hobby/craft/language/fact)?

Nothing unusual. I keep up on CME, science podcasts, podcasts about weed shit.

6. Can you swim? If so, what age were you when you had lessons?

Yes. I don't know. I was told I had lessons, and I kind of remember, but not really.

26. When you look up into the sky, can you identify any of the cloud formations, such as Cumulonimbus, Cirrus or Stratus?

Not really.

27. Have you ever tried box breathing? It is an effective way to calm yourself if you are feeling panicky or overwhelmed. You can find the instructions on this page.

Not that particular technique, but something similar. It helps some. I also try tapping on my hand or chest, which can help.

28. Do you have a favourite cologne or perfume?

No. Perfumes, and most colognes today and I don't get along. OTOH, some of the musk colognes on men-yummy.

29. When was the last time it rained where you live?

Last Tuesday we had our monthly allotment of rain. So much rain. Before that had been weeks.

30. What is your favourite way to eat vegetables?

Mostly raw.

31.
I'm back on LJ. Ended up getting NortonVPN to be able to get LJ on my computer. Kind of side effect is more safety. lol When I looked at Nord, I had to go through way too many steps to find the actual price, which concerned me even though they had a good recommendation. Nord told me with one click. Also, they've been around forever.

Questions under the cut.

MAY:
1. Have you ever contributed to something being crowdfunded? Was there an incentive to do so?

One of John Barrowman's CDs. He is so awesome. I think also a book-anthology of some sort. Also, an Alien(s) movie breakdown.

2. Have you heard of the ‘Language of Flowers’, published in 1884? Victorian Britain and America were caught up in the concept in the 19th Century. Do you know the secret meaning of any flowers?

Heard of it, but never knew any of it (except when fan fiction talks about it. lol)

3. Have you ever traced any of your family tree?

I have not, but my parents and some other family members have. I have the binders.

4. Today is a holiday in many countries, either to celebrate Labour Day or May Day. If you have a day off today, what are your plans?

No day off for the wicked, and pediatricians. ;)

5. Do you like rhubarb?

Maybe? I used to love strawberry-rhubarb pies, but haven't had one in a long time.

6. Have you ever completed a cryptic crossword, or do you stick to the easy ones?

No. I do the NYT crosswords, but after Monday and +- Tuesday I need help.

7. Do you take your phone everywhere, or sometimes leave it at home and not worry about it?

Always being it with me. Fo safety, and so I can listen to podcasts.

8. Henry Dunant was born today in 1828 – he was the co-founder of the Red Cross. Have you ever learned first aid? Could you resuscitate someone?

Cool. Yes. Luckily I haven't had to in a long time.

9. In 1896, the first horseless carriage show in London featured ten models. Do you own a car? What kind of car is it?

2008 Volvo S80 that I drive most days. 2013 Dodge 2500HD diesel-that I drive once a week, and to pull the horse trailer.

10. Are there some colours you would never wear or use in your home?

hmmm....I think maybe colors have their place, jut how much.

11. When was the last time you took a photo?

This evening I took a picture of the pattern the barn kittens made in the dust while eating out of the wet food can.

12. It’s the International Day of Plant Health! Healthy plants mean a healthy planet! Have you ever planted something and watched it grow? Do you look after your houseplants or your garden plants diligently?

Woot! When I lived in Oregon I had a garden and houseplants. Here in Texas I don't have the time, and the animals would destroy them (and have).

13. It’s Top Gun Day! Ever seen it (and/or the sequel)?

Top Gun was good-although after the first time I never watched past the volleyball scene because it was too sad.

14. Have you ever seen a ‘mockumentary’ film or TV show? The term was coined when the 1984 “This is Spinal Tap” film was released, and notable examples on TV include “The Office”.

ummm.....I don't think so.

15. Bees are responsible for pollinating many of the plants we eat (a current estimate is that they are responsible for every three bites of food we eat). Have you seen any bees this year?

I mostly see flies. :(

16. Henry Fonda was born today in 1905 – have you seen any of his films?

I don't think so.

17. It’s World Telecommunications Day – have you ever learned something new online?

I do a lot of my CME for work online.

18. There are hundreds of different shapes of pasta – Farfalle (butterflies), Campanelle (little bell flowers), Orecchiette (little ears), Rigatoni (ridged), amongst others. Which is your favourite pasta shape to have with a sauce?

hmmm...I like spaghetti with butter. Or marinara.

19. How’s your gut microbiome? Your gut is linked to your immune system, so eating a large variety of plants each week (at least 30), and eating fermented foods regularly (such as live yoghurt, kefir, fresh sauerkraut and kimchi) is said to have a huge impact on your gut health and therefore your weight and immune system. Do you make an effort to do that every week?

I eat a lot of yogurt.

20. It’s International Customer Support Day. When was the last time you had to contact customer support? Were they able to help you?

A few days ago about something I was dealing with online. They sort of helped me. lol

21. It’s International Tea Day – do you like a cup of tea every now and again? What type of tea do you drink?

Love tea. English or Irish breakfast.

22. Today Vivid Sydney starts in Sydney, Australia (and continues until 13th June). Iconic landmarks and urban spaces glow with stunning light installations and 3D projections, captivating both locals and tourists with a vibrant playground of lights, music, and creativity. Have you ever seen a city light show similar to this?

Very cool! Only fireworks on the 4th of July. Maybe Las Vegas.

23. When is the last time you ate fresh pineapple – did you prepare it yourself?

Used to love it until I became allergic maybe 10 years ago. I prepared it myself.

24. If you had a pet dog, what name would you give it? What’s the weirdest dog name you’ve heard?

I have Balky vom Volkommen and Helga Ann vom Vollkommen.
I knew a Lilly Noodles Mathes.

25. It’s estimated that gaming now holds around an 11% share of the global entertainment market. Have you ever played an electronic game (on your phone, computer or a game console)?

I had an Atari that I played Pitfall on. :D Now games have way too many buttons. On my phone I like NYT games, solitaire, and now Tasty Travels-a matching game.

I was doing better early in the year, but I'm catching up. :D

9. It’s National Garlic Month – are you a fan? If so, what’s your favourite recipe using garlic?
OMG yum! Pizza, red sauce.

10. Do you often see wild birds in your backyard/garden/nearby open spaces? What are the most common ones you see in your area?
I have so many birds. I don't mow my lawn much, and I have water sources.
pigeons, doves, killdeer, hawks. a blackbird of some sort. starlings, I think. little sparrows.

11. Have you ever flown a kite?
yes, a long time ago. wind is too strong here.

12. What’s your favourite breed of dog?
currently German Shepherd Dog. Although I also love a livestock guard dog.

13. Have you ever volunteered to do something long-term?
Define long term. I have been on the church choir since 2010. I spent several years helping out with my Arab club's horse shows.

14. It’s International Laverbread Day (here’s the Wiki entry). Have you ever tried it?
Never heard of it

15. Leonardo Da Vinci was born today in 1452. What comes to mind when you think of Leonardo? Have you ever seen one of his works?
Chapel paintings. Never seen one in person.

16. Have you ever seen any of her films?
No.

20. Did you sleep well last night?
Yes. :)

21. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would that be?
Hard question. I like my little farm and the people here, TBH. Would do some work on it, though.

22. If you took part in a quiz, what would be your specialist subject?
Not sure. I know I'm not great at politics or current famous people

23. In 1895, Ngaio Marsh, New Zealand detective writer and producer, was born in Christchurch, New Zealand. Have you ever read any of her detective novels? If not, who is your favourite detective novelist?
I haven't. The Liturgical Mysteries are great! The main character is an Episcopal organist who is also the town sheriff and also happens to be independently wealthy. Very good mysteries, but hilarious a hell.

24. It’s Barbara Streisand’s birthday – are you a fan of her music or movies?
Honestly, no. She's okay, and I recognize she's a great singer and actor, but not my thing.

25. When’s the last time you had to use a plumber?
umm...maybe a year ago I had one fix my kitchen sink line and change out my sand filter.

26. In 2004, Shrek the sheep from Tarras, Central Otago, New Zealand, was finally shorn live on TV after 6 years of avoidance; the fleece weighed 27 kg (60 lb). Do you own, or have you made anything from sheep’s wool?
Oh wow! I don't think I have anything made of wool anymore. I am allergic to wearing wool.

29. When was the last time you received a letter (not junk mail)?
Do Christmas cards count?

30.
Made it through Holy Week. We had practice Wed evening. Thursday evening was Maundy Thursday service with foot washing, then the shipping of the alter. I always stay after an hour to meditate, so home late. Friday noon Good Friday service. Saturday evening Easter Vigil service starting in darkness with candlelight, then ringing bells, bell choir added, and high notes :D. Lasts a loooong time, but it's my favorite service. Then Sunday morning Easter service followed by a brunch. Then sleeeeeeeep. Also, I had a sinus infection through all of it. (getting better finally, but still tried and autonomically off).

25. How often do you wash your hair? Do you style it, or just let it dry naturally?
Every morning. It goes up in a bun or double pony tail after towel drying and leave in conditioner.

26. In 1484 Aesops Fables were first printed in English by William Caxton. Do you recall any of the fables, such as The Tortoise and the Hare?
Yeah, but not very many.

27. It’s World Theatre Day – when was the last time you went to the theatre?
Last went to the opera a few years ago, a play was much longer.

28. Have you ever been to a circus?
A regular one when I was a kid. Cirque du Soleil maybe 10 years ago.

29. Have you ever made anything out of clay?
No. I have done the cleaning and painting of pre molded clay when I was in ?junior high?

30. Are you allergic, or have an intolerance, to anything?
Nature hates me. I take three allergy meds, and still have an itchy nose. I am the 20% allergy shots don't work for. :/
Now I also am allergic to fresh citrus, kiwi, pineapple, mango, nectarines. Midly, at least.

31. Do you regularly use your freezer? What do you store in there? Be honest – how often do you check what’s in there…?
I use it most for ice for the drinks I take to the barn. Ice cream, frozen meals for weekday lunch, ice packs. lol

1. Have you ever been fooled by an ‘April Fool’s Day’ joke?
Not recently. Not a fan of pranks.

2. Do you prefer sweet things or savoury things to eat?
Depends on my mood.

3. Do other people shorten your given name? Do you shorten your own name?
Close friends from when I was younger do. Sometimes I shorten it when I talk to myself. ;)

4. Are there opportunities to go walking where you live? Do you take advantage of that?
In my neighborhood there's only bar ditches. Big canyon 20 miles away, but I'm not really a hiker anymore (have barn work now. lol)

5. Pineapple on a pizza – yes, or no?
Sure.

6. Is there a fashion or style from your youth that you wish would come back, or are you happy with how people dress these days?
I did like neon.

7. It’s National Robotics Week – if you could have a personal robot, what would you like it to do for you?
Rosie the Robot!!

8. Have you ever played card games? If so, what’s your favourite game?
Solitaire app count? Bullshit was fun. Poker is interesting, but I hate losing money. lol Other ones I've played as a kid.

Had a good riding lesson today. It's always good to hear it doesn't look as bad as I think it does. lol

16. How often do you eat out?
Lunch 2-3 times a week. Dinner once a week during choir.

17. It’s Kurt Russell’s birthday – a child actor who grew up. Have you seen any of the Disney films in which he acted (he played the college student Dexter Riley)?
I checked IMDB, and it looks like I didn't really see anything of his until the 1980's.

18. Which flowers or trees are blooming where you live now?
um....the white trees? lol I've heard they are pear.

19. If you had the space (and the time), would you like to keep chickens?
No way, Jose. I have no problem with other people's chickens, but not a fan of domestic birds.

20. Was learning a new language part of your education when you were at school? Can you still remember any of it?
We learned a tiny bit in elementary. Then nothing until college. I learned a little bit of Japanese, but have forgotten most of it. Actually got my credit requirement through choir-we sang in so many languages (fun!).

21. It’s National California Strawberry Day. What is your favourite way to eat strawberries?
chocolate covered. :)

22. Do you still buy physical books, or do you tend to buy e-books these days? Does it depend on the type of book (i.e. fiction or non-fiction)?
Still prefer to have physical books. Have gotten e-books if it's way cheaper or I am impatient, but often wish I had a real book. Don't mind reading fanfic on the phone or computer, though. Weird.

23. When was the last time you ate some chocolate?
Yesterday I had a Riesen.

24. Harry Houdini was born today in 1874. Are you a fan of magic shows? Have you ever seen someone perform close-up magic?
When I was younger I had a cousin who did magic. I also did a little myself about that time.
Yes, I know it's all sleight of hand, but it's still impressive what they can do.

8. It’s International Women’s Day – can you name any famous female artists, musicians, scientists or authors?
Marie Curie! I kind of suck at remembering names. Author-Seanin McGuire, musician-Pat Benatar, artist-the chick from New Mexico that I got some cool pop art from.

9. As it’s ‘Check Your Batteries Day’, when was the last time you checked your stock of batteries? Or, do you just buy them when you need them?
I try to keep some of each available. Had to buy AA today.

10. It’s International Wig Day – have you ever worn a wig or a hairpiece?
A wig for a short amount of time. They make me itch *so much*.

11. How organised are you with household paperwork (or is everything just in one big pile)?
Both. I keep it in a pile for a while, then log and file when I feel like it. Can be a few weeks, or a few months.

12. When was the last time you vacuumed the floor?
bwaaa hahahaha. I mean, I just swept the living room floor tonight. (see #15)

13. It’s International School Meals Day. Did you ever have school meals, and what dish still sticks in your memory if you did?
Yes. I had institutional food until I was 28. (gotta love school). I know I had favorites, but don't remember what they were. I did learn to mix cereals in college, though.

14. International ‘Ask Me A Question Day’. Go ahead – ask me a question!
I'm pretty sure this means you ask me a question.

15. What’s the weather like today?
OMG, so shitty. Was 80 yesterday and so nice. Today it's in the 50s, with feels like in the 20s. Sustained wind over 30 mph with gusts to 45. Dirt is ***everywhere**. Also, the wind is coming from the north, which has no wind block. At least the barn is okay, since the stalls open to the south.

If you visit somewhere special, do you buy a small memento to bring home (such as a fridge magnet, keyring, ornament or something else)?
I like to get t-shirts if I can.

4. Have you ever been in a road traffic accident (either as a driver, pedestrian or on a bike)?
Yes. A few little bumps, one where my truck needed a new door, and then one that totaled my Totoya celica (and lead to the truck).

5. How many local birds can you name?
3 or 4.

6. And then other stuff I could probably do without, but have anyway. lol

27. Have you received a letter recently?
Last was a Valentine's Card from enchanted_jae. :)

28. Do you own many notebooks? What do you use them for?
I have a few. The fancy ones stated as journals, but only have a few pages done. lol

1. Since 1990, Clean Up Australia Limited has sponsored a yearly Clean Up Australia Day. Have you ever taken part in a ‘clean up’ initiative where you live?
We don't really have them where I live. Companies can 'adopt' sections of highways. It's pretty flat, and there's a lot of wind here, so even if something was cleaned, a few days later there will be trash. Or vice versa. ;/

I only get the main holidays off, so I totally forgot yesterday was a holiday. Was wondering why I hadn't gotten paid yesterday. This morning I was reminded it was because of the holiday. Ah. Already had waited a day since the 15th was on Sunday.

Valentine's Day was a little stressful because I socialized! The opera had a fundraiser with a social hour (ack!) and then an awesome folky-ish concert. https://www.americanportraits.org
I successfully socialized without bursting into flames. lol The musicians were wonderful, and the pianist was quirky fun.

12. Do you have any siblings?
Functionally, one. I have two half siblings that I don't really interact with.

13. What’s the weather like today? Is it about average for the time of year?
It was in the 70's with nasty bad wind. The temp is a bit above average. The wind was a bit more than usual, but spring we tend to get nasty wind. Going to be in the 50's in a few days-that's more normal.

14. How many flights of stairs would you consider walking up in a building, or do you always take the lift/elevator?
One of my attendings once said I take the elevator up and the stairs down. Thought it was smart. lol It depends on where I am. Mostly, though I'll go up one, maybe two.

15. Have you ever considered how you would leave your home in an emergency?
Yes. Luckily I have good windows or doors in my house. I do worry about my critters.

16. Do you own your own washing machine in your home, or do you use a laundry service/laundry room in the building or a launderette?
Luckily I have my own. Because of clinic and barn stuff I do a *lot* of laundry.

17. Chinese New Year begins today, and festivities continue until March 3rd – the year of the Fire Horse.
Choir practice on Wednesdays. I sneak a personal pan at Pizza Hut for dinner since it starts at 6pm.
My hydrant is unfrozen, yay!

28. Have you ever played a kazoo?
Yes! They were a lot of fun to mess around with back in the day. Haven't played with on in decades.

No lesson because it's cold- brrrr! lol It was in the 40's, but winter 40's. Instead I did some errands.

I need to change my chiropractor appt to next week instead of 3 weeks from now because my right SI joint is out. Again. Lazy days at home are nice, but usually lead to my SI coming out from sitting. After a fall (from a horse)several years ago it came out the first time, and stayed that way for a long time. Since then it'll come out once in a while just for fun. It makes my whole left lower back hurt and pulls my hip, so I walk like an old lady. Well, older lady. lol I could have called to see if they had an appointment this afternoon, but I had things to do, and I am a stubborn idiot. Usually the pain eventually decreases to a dull roar.

27. Up-Helly-Aa is a vibrant fire festival celebrated in the UK Shetland Islands tonight. Thousands gather to witness the breathtaking sight of a longship ablaze, illuminating the night sky. Do you have any similar local winter or summer celebrations?

Oh wow, sounds fancy. Also, I love a Shetland pony.
We don't have anything cool. Several days before and after July 4th idiots out where I live set off their fireworks. Does that count?

Temps are finally in the 30's today. I think the high was 33? And only supposed to get to 20F tonight. Yay!
Barnyard hydrant still frozen, not surprised. It'll take at least a few more days of over 30 temps.

26. It’s Australia Day! What do you think of when you think of Australia?
Space Australia , And look, it's on AO3, too.

Instead of in person service our church had a zoom morning prayer service. In our PJs, or robes-it was specified in the email lol. Our priest was wearing an ear flap hat. It was fun.

Thankfully my kitchen and tack room faucets started running again. They are still running because it's supposed to be 2F tonight.
It did get up to about 23F today. Not near enough to unfreeze the hydrant, but the stall waterers are still filling nicely.
We maybe got 5 inches of snow total, but since my farm is open to the north I get drifts. Not too bad this time, but still a slog to walk through. /whine.

25. It’s Burn’s Night – a night to celebrate Robert Burns and all things Scottish. Do you like Scotch whisky or do you prefer Irish Whiskey?
When I was younger I liked Dalwhinnie (sp?). Now I don't really drink any alcohol.

23. The pirate William Kidd was born this month in 1645. Have you read Treasure Island?
Maybe? I've read a lot of pirate and tall ship books, especially years ago.

24. Have you ever knitted a garment or had one knitted for you?
One of my online friends knitted me a pumpkin hat several years ago. I loved it, and wore it during the winter for years, until I left it somewhere. :( Also, one of my previous NPs made me a neck warmer.

Cold here. Forgot to turn the faucet on in the tack room last night, so that's frozen. The space heater is running still, so I'm hoping that'll be enough to not have a break. (I've had two breaks before, and it floods all the stalls. Not fun) It's been before. *crosses fingers*
Also left the kitchen faucet off during the afternoon (it faces north), and I can only get the hot water to work, so I left that on.

We're suppose to have 'arctic' weather coming tomorrow, with snow and wind. Everyone is totally freaking out. Did I mention they said 5 inches? Not 5 feet. A mom told my nurse today that there's no chicken, milk, bread left in stores. She mentioned something else gone that was just stupid, but I can't remember what it was.
I'm just not looking forward to schlepping water in the cold. I have tank heaters, but my hydrant leaks. Hopefully this summer I can get it fixed. The indoor waterers will stay unfrozen to at least 10 degrees, but below that at least one of the three will freeze.

Got home late today, so wasn't able to clean stalls. Dangit.

21. Do you like wearing colourful socks? What do the brightest socks you own look like?
I like fun boot socks for riding. Most of the ones I use now are from here: https://dreamersnschemers.com

22. In January 1496, Leonardo da Vinci unsuccessfully tested a flying machine. Do you like flying?
I used to, but now I'm a cranky adult. lol Also, my reflux sometimes gives me nausea while flying, which is not fun.
