It amuses me a little that Barack Obama has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on the same day as the completion of a pre-emptive strike by the United States on neutral lunar territory for the purposes of assessing the fitness of the moon for long-term occupation.

(Re: the prize itself? It's hopeful and optimistic, and would seem to follow in the spirit of Nobel's will. The committee seems to think so too: interview with Geir Lundestad*, Secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee; NPP 2009 press release. Also: Obama's remarks on the prize.)

Metaquotes

It's just this comm, y'know? Where people repost stuff from other people. I think I've posted quotes two or three times now, just when I've found things on LJ that are particularly worth sharing. It's a fun place, mostly, and the mods do a great job of keeping the unfun stuff to a minimum.

Also, I was much happier when shaysdays fixed the image tag in the comm userinfo.

Cake

Cake is great, especially when it's delicious and moist. I approve of cake.

Also, I have a cake icon that I tend to use rather a lot.

Marvin

Marvin is my default icon, from an imagey thing I did years ago when I was watching David & Margaret reviewing the HHGttG film, and heard Marvin speak with Alan Rickman's voice.

The result was so evitable it was inevitable.

Since then, there have been some seasonal variations on the Marvin, for the release of HBP, the release of Serenity, and Xmas.

RPGs

Many and varied! Though I tend to get progressively more flakesome over time with Interwebs freeform roleplaying, which is a known problem that I have. (Though my flakesomeness extends to other things, too.)

As for non-freeform RPG stuff, my interests mostly run towards story games: that is, games where the players are involved in the ongoing creation of a story, which then influences the play of the game. They tend to distribute authority around: players have a degree of control over the world and the other entities in it that is typically the exclusive domain of the GM in games like Shadowrun, WoD, or D&D. And while those more traditional games can be fun too
(except that D&D typically is not fun for me), there's this great thing that happens when everyone around the table gets to contribute things that are real in the shared fiction, that exist in the game world, because all of us making things up is better than one of us making things up.

Questionable Content

QC is a webcomic found at http://questionablecontent.net/ (or questionablerss). It's one of two webcomics that I remember to read on an ongoing basis (the other, of course, being xkcd).

I can never seem to keep track of how many people on my flist have been converted to the goodness that is QC. Suffice to say, if you do not yet read it, you should strongly consider doing do.

Having seen altogether too much ZOMGDONOTWANTPOST splashed all over the nargletubes in recent times, I feel it's time for a refresher course in the correct operation of modern human interface devices as they relate to being a grown-up.

I am aware that many of you are, indeed, highly skilled at use of human interface devices and/or at being grown-ups, and I ask that you give your patience and encouragement to those among us lacking in the skills necessary to play nicely with others.

So, dear interwebbertubes, here is a HIGHLY EFFECTIVE procedure for dealing with things that you, personally, do not wish to read on the Internet:

Assume a firm yet relaxed grip on your computer mouse.
Place a finger on the scroll wheel.
Draw the finger on the scroll wheel toward you, pressing lightly on the wheel. This may cause it to feel as though it is moving; this is perfectly normal.
Repeat steps 2-3 until the unwanted item is no longer visible on the screen.
Go about your day normally.

This procedure is adequate for scrolling on most modern desktop computers, and can help to reduce time used by, and occupational overuse injuries caused by, posting comments or entries to whine about things that you have read, and the ensuing flouncing when others point out that the whining is, perhaps, nonessential.

Come back next week as we venture into more advanced techniques, including the correct operation of the difficult and mysterious 'PAGE DOWN' key.

I am not entirely sure what I think of The Foundry's ad for The Pitch on tonight's episode of The Gruen Transfer.

It's... the disclaimers speak fact. The disclaimers are really, seriously meaningful disclaimers, and the material in the ad is extremely likely to offend.

Even after a second viewing of the ad and the discussion, I think my thoughts on it most closely resemble those of Todd and Bram (the two panelists on the left hand side of the screen).

Discuss. Heatedly, if necessary.

Dear trial participants,

The Orphic Institute thanks you for your participation in this trial of long-distance usage of Mnemosyne. It is recommended that participants read through the patient's introduction to treatment with Mnemosyne (currently in its sixth draft).

An RPG.

Evil Hat are, at some point in the future, going to release a somewhat unusual RPG called A Penny For My Thoughts. All that we mere mortals (with neutral or good hats) know is that this is a date that has not yet arrived.

APMFT is about amnesiacs recovering their memories through use of a drug that lets their fellow patients recall details of their life. It's a collaborative retelling of your character's unknown past, where the other players give you details to help your character remember... if only you want to.

There are draft versions of the game available - and drivingblind's post would seem to suggest that a game would lend itself well to LJ, and could be played through a single LiveJournal entry. The prompts could be collected in screened comments, the character sheets could be edited comments (or comment threads, with comment subjects for the questions), and then each recollection could have its own thread.

If four to six of you are interested in trying it, it might be interesting to try to run it either here or in an apathy_games post. Draft six is the version of the rules I have, and you need only read to page 16 to know how to play.
