Hey everyone :) Quick pre-christmas post to say HAPPY CHRISTMAS to those of you who celebrate it, and to those of you who don't, well have a good day tomorrow anyway :)

In this last week I've been stuck in the snow in Amsterdam, up to Norwich and back and then to my parents in Surrey and now I'm back in Cambridge to go to work tomorrow (because clearly people still want to book hotels, even on December 25th).

Longer, more detailed post coming soon (because I know I've barely updated recently) but right now I'm going to crash out early. Hope you all have a good time tomorrow :)

Not really sure what to do with myself today. I've been st on my bed for the last three/four hours pretending to be productive. The job I applied for on Monday has gone from the listings on Prospects so hopefully that's good news?? I couldn't see much else that I was qualified to do that involved editorial work. My mum thinks I shouldn't be so picky. I think she's probably right.

Coursework coursework coursework! I've had the file open for my story but it's not helping. I might take the paper version into the city, go find a nice coffee place (hello, starbucks!) and settle down there for the afternoon. And maybe squeeze in a tiny bit of shopping. I bought a hat yesterday. I really don't care that it's now coming up to summer. It was a nice hat and it was £2.

I saw Kick Ass yesterday with Charlie. That little girl made the film! Loved it.

Amina, you make me smile, btw :) ♥

Just arrived home from uni to find a mystery package for me in my mum's handwriting - I opened it to find my little brother (the youngest one) has sent me some CD copies I mentioned I wanted ages ago, and a card as well! He's totally adorable when he wants to be! Now I'm going to make a cup of tea and upload Bat for Lashes, Ladyhawke, La Roux, Marina and the Diamonds and Vampire Weekend! Good times.

1. What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before?

Worked abroad (albeit for two days!) I actually think that's it.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

Not a single one, not that I really had any strong ones - and of course I've made more!

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

No.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

My uncle - not really close to me, but family.

5. What countries did you visit?

Greece.

6. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?

A degree!

7. What date from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

There isn't one date in 2009 that really stands out. I'll remember my 21st.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Remaining in uni after 2nd year! Getting a week of work experience.

9. What was your biggest failure?

The lack of classes I attended, and the plans to spend the summer abroad that turned into a week!

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Only the usual bumps and bruises, and the odd cold

11. What was the best thing you bought?

hmm~ probably my lovely boots! I've been eying up a lot of things to go in ~my future apartment~ though

12. Where did most of your money go?

Rent, food shopping, clothes shopping, Greece.

13. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Working in Greece. My 21st birthday. Deciding to go into journalism. and MUSE <3

14. What song will always remind you of 2009?

Poker Face!

15. Compared to this time last year, are you:

not sure where the question is here! But I have a bit more sense of direction, even if I do still feel like I'm floundering a bit!

16. What do you wish you'd done more of?

uni work. saving money. exercise

17. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Eating.

18. How did you spend Christmas?

With my family, and reading

19. Did you fall in love in 2009?

Briefly

20. How many one-night stands?

6

21. What was your favorite TV program?

I did have a massive love affair with True Blood. also totes addicted to How I Met Your Mother!

22. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

not really. I'm a bit miffed with friends from back home, but that's life.

23. What was the best book you read?

"Heart's Blood" by Juliet Marillier, I seriously love it - of course that's also the one that's freshest in my mind. I loved Audrey Niffeneger's new book as well.

24. What was your greatest musical discovery?

trance music

25. What did you want and get?

normal day-to-day things.

26. What did you want and not get?

A cat.

27. What was your favorite film of this year?

This was the year I fell in love with "In Bruges", even though that was last year's film.

28. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I was 21, and I went out the night before and then had lunch with Emma.

29. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

getting a 2:1 at the end of second year (or the impossible: a first!)

30. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?

I attempted to do the flowery thing and abruptly left it to Lisa. I started wearing more black again but more stylishly than when I was 14! and I almost never wear trousers any more.

31. What kept you sane?

the future~

32. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

idk... I did have rather a crush on Alex Skarsgaard but I think that was down to ONTD!

33. What political issues stirred you the most?

idk about "stirred" but I paid attention to things about the recession and what percentage of young graduates are out of work etc etc

34. Who did you miss?

Kat. :(

35. Who was the best new person you met?

Aimee is the only new person I really got to know.

36. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009:

hard work is necessary!

37. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:

can't think of one!

38. Where did you begin 2009?

in Henry's bar in Norwich, trying to stop Gemma from falling over.

39. What was your relationship status by Valentine's Day?

siiiiiingle

40. Were you in school anytime this year?

occasionally ;D

41. How did you earn your money?

factory, two days PR in Greece, a little bit of data inputting, and being one of the few people willing to go to WH Smiths at 7am to do the news delivery

42. Did you have to go to the hospital?

not once

43. Did you have any encounters with the police?

no

44. Would you relive 2009 over and over again?

If I was going to do it properly and not sit on my ass then yes, but otherwise I'm happy to move on!

45. What did you purchase that was over $1000?

Tuition

46. Did you know anybody who got married?

no one close.

47. Has anyone betrayed you in 2009?

yeah i guess so.

48. Where do you live now?

student house in Norwich

49. What's something you thought you'd never do but did in 2009?

nothing I've done yet, but deciding to go into journalism.

50. What has been your favorite moment?

Muse was epic, of course. and others as well

51. What's something you learned about yourself?

I can't cross the road safely

52. Were you in a relationship this year?

no

53. What music will you remember 2009 by?

already answered

54. Would you say you've changed since the beginning of this year?

in a few small ways

55. Do you think 2010 will be better or worse?

It's the start!

Yeah, back in Norwich now. Five hours of travelling! I had a lot of things I wanted to do this evening but I'm tired and don't care so I might just sleep. Work at 7am tomorrow - woohoo.

So today I went to the cinema to see The Time Traveler's Wife with Patsy and Katie. I'll get to that in a minute but as this was the first time I've been to the cinema in aaages, have some random trailer musings!

Katie and I were trying to guess them as they started playing and we got 3/4.

FAME
I haven't seen the original but this looks pretty good, you know my feelings about musicals so this is one I definately want to see! Love the theme song of course.

Dorian Gray
another great trailer IMO - I've not read the book but I know the basic story, Ben Barnes seemed pretty good from the trailer and Colin Firth was actually looking semi-attractive (I really don't like him in anything other than P&P). very much want to see this as well!

(500) Days of Summer
Heard a lot about this from ONTD but although it looks good it's not something I'd pay to go see. Zooey Deschanel annoys me.

Creation
The one neither of us had heard of. It looks okay but films that are big on history aren't really my thing, I wasn't exactly captivated by the trailer.

Okay, the Time Traveler's Wife! Let me start by saying that I loved the film. I did - I thought Rachel McAdams was perfect, both Albas were SO CUTE and perfect as well, and Eric Bana, although he'll never be my Henry, was good as well (although we all agreed he seemed a bit too safe and not edgy enough). But as with everything the film missed out so many bits I would have loved - Clare's death most of all, but also Kimi, Ingrid (I already knew she and Celia weren't in it though) and the relationship between Clare and her family.

I did like the parts with Henry's mother but I would happily have cut those out for some of the bits they missed. As I said to the others I would have quite easily sat through a Return of the King length film but that's because I love this book so much. I wish there had been more of Clare as a child as well - the part with the ouiji board, and when Henry beats up that guy for her. I felt it just went through their lives step-by-step - They meet, they hook up, they get married, they have a baby, Henry dies.

Also the thing that got me the most - the final scene, when Clare is running across the field - I wanted Henry to disappear before she got there, I thought that would have been far more moving. And like I said, I was really waiting for the Clare-as-an-old-woman part, because THAT is the bit that really got to me in the book, but no. I tried to make the others wait till after the credits to see if they played it then but the cinema people were coming in to clean so we had to go.

I'd happily see it again though! I want to read the book again now. Audrey Niffenegger has a new one coming out this October and as I will be once again working in a bookshop (yaaaay...) I can go get it with discount!

OH AND ONE MORE THING I could have forgiven them cutting out Kimi, Ingrid, Clare's death, everything else - if they had just once said the "world enough and time" part from the Andrew Marvell poem, but no. :(

Also there appears to be a spider infestation in our lounge. :(

But I still buy hardbacks if it's something I really want.

2. Do you have a favorite place to read in your home?
on my bed =) Although at my grandparents' I always read in the garden.

3. Do you have a favorite place to read away from, or outside of, your home?
In coffee shops, and sometimes on the train although I'm more likely to have a magazine

4. Do you snack while you read? If so, favorite reading snack?
I don't actually! I snack watching films though.

5. Do you tend to mark your books as you read, or does the idea of writing in books horrify you?
I never write in them unless they're for uni and then I don't tend to because I'm lazy.

6. How do you keep your place while reading a book? Bookmark? Dog-ears? Laying the book flat open?
I lose bookmarks like crazy. I never lie them flat, but I either dog-ear them (if it's a paperback) or I memorise the page number!! tbh I can usually get through a book in one go.

7. Fiction, Non-fiction, or both?
Fiction.

8. Hardcopy or audiobooks?
hardcopy, although when I was little and we didn't have a TV I would always listen to dramatisations when I was sick - the Chronicles of Narnia, His Dark Materials, Over Sea Under Stone, and the Water Babies!

9. Are you a person who tends to read to the end of chapters, or are you able to put a book down at any point?
as I said above I usually just plough all the way through until I get so tired I have to give up wherever I am.

10. If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop to look it up right away? Write it down to look it up later? Just try to infer what it means from the rest of the sentence, and keep going?
I just carry on!

11. What are you currently reading?
Angela Carter's Book of Fairy Tales

12. What is the last book you bought?
as above :D

13. What is your all time favorite book?
I want to say the Lord of the Rings for old times' sake. But I don't really know. I adore Jon McGregor's If Nobody Speaks, and The Time Traveler's Wife is a close runner up.

14. Are you the type of person that only reads one book at a time, or can you read more than one at a time?
if I have a new book I will read it uninterrupted! otherwise I can just pick up and leave off several.

15. Do you like re-reading books?
all the time! every time I go home I reread all my childhood favourites :D Tamora Pierce, anyone?

My typing is totally failing so I'm going to call it a night. I did have a lovely long whinge planned about how I am jobless and penniless but you've heard it all before ;)

Muse & literature

Muse post on ONTD has filled me with all kinds of happy!! I am seriously wondering if it would be very bad of me to spend my September student loan on tickets to the rest of their UK shows...

Also I need Matt Bellamy icons.

:')

in other news, I've now got rid of about half the books on my bookshelf via Ebay and am mostly left with those I'm ~considering~ (Tamora Pierce's later series, Fushigi Yuugi, some CLAMP, Jacqueline Wilson, Robin Hobb etc) and those I could never part with (Clover, the Alanna series, LotR ofc!! and Fruits Basket). I've been rereading a lot of things I loved when I was like twelve. Which has got me wondering!! Flist, do you have books you'll pick up after five years and reread again? What are your favourite older books?
Tamora Pierce is definately amongst mine, and Garth Nix's Sabriel etc; His Dark Materials... Juliet Marillier too (but I got those more recently).
All my books that don't fall into YA or SciFi seem to be up in Norwich! Emily has a copy of the Time Traveler's Wife which she has mauled to pieces :( ANYWAY I am rambling so I'll go iconhunting ;)

Time Traveller's Wife trailer (contains book spoilers)
heeeeere! (tried to embed it but html fails me!)

I am actually kinda disappointed. This is one of my favourite things in the whole world and the trailer didn't really strike me as being epic :(

I mean, I also thought it was really spoilery- there was nothing to suggest Clare's child was in danger of being born, and you actually saw Alba running around - very little of the darker stuff in the book and it looked like what someone had written in the comments - like The Notebook but with Eric Bana and Time Travel. Rachel McAdams - although I think she's awewsome - isn't quite how I pictured Clare (I thought she was meant to have red hair, anyway?) and the child Clare looks really annoying. Anyway. It's out August 14th so I will go and see it then!

In other news I have a job interview! It's monday morning so I am quite excited.

Back from Greece, will explain later!!

Lisa and I are looking for Muse tickets. They went on sale two days ago; I checked in the evening and they had already all sold out. Cue anger and tears! (Not really). But seriously. I would actually do anything to see this band live again. We're following a couple of items on Ebay but I don't know how lucky we will be!! Fingers crossed!! I was just wondering as I know several of you are Muse fans - anyone else manage to get tickets and for where/when?

being human finale reactions

i waited for everyone else to go out and then borrowed Toby's laptop to watch it! so::

-Josie is wonderful. I would love to see a flashback depicting hers and Mitchell's storyline.
-Nina was scratched!!! I didn't think anything of it when it happened, just 'oh no George is hurting the woman he loves!" and it wasn't until you saw the scars later that it registered - but i wonder what this could mean for them? that's really sad though - there goes any hopes of them leading a normal life.
-I felt Annie got a bit of a cop out this episode, apart from her amazing 'I shall be badass and open doors with my ghostly powers!" part. All her crying broke my heart tho. I suppose she got her moment at the end of episode five.
- Annie and Mitchell!!! I really, really thought they were going to kiss. Okay, I knew they wouldn't, but I thought they would. That statement didn't make sense!! But there was chemistry. I am honestly not a rabid shipper.
-I sometimes wonder if Lenora and Russel might feel slightly miffed at the Mitchell character being so much more important in the scheme of things than theirs are.
-The waitress girl was insane. It's really quite sad tho, she was nice and normal in episode 1(?) when she first pops up. I feel Herrick's downgraded a bit from Lauren.
-Herrick. he was so blase about everything and then suddenly seemed to accept death - I don't know, did he think for a moment he'd be any match for werewolf!George? Also, why didn't he attack George when he was beginning the transformation ie powerless? (I imagine it was because of the star of david, actually...) but yes.

I loved this episode but it still left me disappointed because we now have to wait until whenever season two is!!! Then again, as of a few days ago no one had any idea that there WOULD be a season two, so I guess we can be greatful for that!!

ahh i love that show.

on being human ep05

Lisa and I watched it together, I think she may not have been too thrilled with me as I shouted at the screen quite a lot.

We both hate Owen. I was so mad that he dismissed Annie's haunting! and afterwards with Janey... he's such a dickhead. SUCH a dickhead. I am still seething. And afterwards he wasn't even turning himself in, he was looking for protection, if in a very stupid way. grr.

It was so nice that Mitchell and George let Annie expose them even if it was only to Owen, especially after George's nervousness around Mitchell's ex earlier in the episode.

I actually liked Lauren!! I was sad when she died. I was a little sad when Seth died too but mainly because I find his character quite amusing.

I have this kind-of-theory that Annie will have to save Mitchell through the door, I have nooo idea how (and if i'm right I really hope it's not in a Heroes- everyone comes back to life! type way.) but i want them to finish the series all together and fine and very much grounded in the human world. but i really can't tell if they are aiming for a happy ending here. i hope so!!

i could ramble on for so much longer but i won't. this was a good episode. one more to go!

being human 1x04

This starts chronologically, and then rapidly disintergrates into full-blown rambling, with far too much questioning!!

Where do I belong? Who are my people? Where do my loyalties lie?

The opening line pretty much summed up the whole episode. I was incredibly sad that Mitchell went back to Herrick at the end, but moreso that it wasn't due to the persuasion of the vampires, but the flaws of humanity.

Also the smoker inside me was somehow overjoyed to see it open with him smoking. Ridiculous, I know.

Annie sitting on the stairs was tragic - you can see instantly she's changed and isn't happy-go-lucky but bitter and furious and hurt.

LOVED Mitchell-over-the-ages (and not just because of the leather pants!)

At the beginning of this episode, seeing Seth be all psycho-grin and Herrick more... jovial... (I know he wasn't at this time, but he still seems so unthreatening) I thought, Seth may well be a main antagonist in the end. I'm not so sure now though - looks like Herrick'll be calling the shots.

"Do you think I can channel it, because I have been dying to pull that fridge out."

Oh, Annie! :(

Annie in general in this episode was very angry, sad, bitter - I don't think we got to see her old self at all. She wasn't happy until she was burning the photographs of herself and Owen, and that was more... weird. Weird-happy. And now she can be seen by people again! I wonder what will come of that? Could it include Owen? So pissed off the bastard didn't get what he deserved in this episode, I hope it comes soon.

George... I wasn't paying quite as close attention to his storyline, until Nina's line about how she would have listened if he had told her - very poignant. I hope, if he tells her eventually, she doesn't laugh it off as crazy. I really want her to trust him. And I feel she has become a much more rounded character now - or at least a character whose reasons you understand, because back in episode two it seemed like she was just a man-hater for no apparent reason.

I am also awaiting Tully's return, not eagerly, because he was seriously creepy - but I'm sure the writers left him alive for a reason and let's be honest, from the outcome of the episode I reckon George may need another werewolf. (He's still a dickhead though). And if the episodes are going Mitchell-George-Annie then it's George's turn next week.

I don't think we'll be seeing Bernie and Fleur again though - although how goddamn terrible was their ending?? (and by terrible I mean - really, really sad, not bad!) "I'm hungry." Poor Fleur. It rings so much of Becca and the end of ep01 when Annie asks George "should he have saved her?" and George replies that Mitchell did, because he let her die. I don't know how long Bernie will remain a little boy for. I really hope he doesn't hurt his mum, who loved him however lax her parenting skills may be.

Lauren didn't annoy me nearly as much (maybe because she was in it less - although when she was there, she grew on me a little) her "no hard feelings" speech was very poignant... i wonder if it affected Mitchell's decision at the end? I really thought far a while (as we were meant to, obvs) that he hadn't turned Bernie. And once again he's abandoned him, just like he did Lauren - although at least Bernie's not on his own. But I've already done my I-hope-Bernie-stays-innocent part!

Totally wasn't expecting the pedophile plot, I thought from the preview last week that definately Mitchell and maybe George, if not Annie, had been outed. George didn't seem to get it though - he was going on and on about how they weren't fit to be living with humans etc when it was human misunderstanding and pigheadedness that got them in that position. And Mitchell being an <strike>idiot</strike> addict.

So, Mitchell. (I really can't see Guy Flanagan's Mitchell being believable as Aidan Turner's was in this episode.) I felt that he's certainly portrayed as having a lot more shit to deal with than either Annie or George - he's got more history, for a start, with George only being a werewolf for a couple of years and Annie dead for about one(?) although not brand new to their conditions they certainly don't have the long years of living with it that Mitchell does (and judging by his conversation with Herrick mid-episode, he wasn't always against it) - though from his preview in the 1960s where he lets that girl escape, his misgivings aren't new.
This is getting very tl;dr so I shall try to draw to a close - Lots of things happened that I did not expect. I really want to see what Mitchell going back to Herrick will involve..! Will he tell George and Annie? I doubt it. Will George and Mitchell have to leave? What will happen to Annie? (in this case, either they'll stay or she will end up going through the door.) anyway. I'll have to wait for iplayer (or TV, if I can catch it tomorrow - I'll be in a house with freeview!!) to catch the preview.

Here's to hoping that rambled nonsense had some kind of coherency!!

Just a note f-list, this is also a mini-hiatus as I'm away from tomorrow until Tuesday =)

Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes ♥ I had a really good day, I'll post about it in more detail when I'm online at a more sociable hour!

because tomorrow is coursework deadline #2 of the week. Typically I only discovered this at 8 this evening and panicked rather a lot. Right now I have about 380 words and am trying to decide whether it's a better idea to write until I collapse or hope that my alarm will actually wake me up in time to finish it.
LJ posts are always necessary when coursework needs to be procrastinated on.
asldjaskljd one gone. one due tomorrow. one due monday. I will be very glad when tuesday comes round.

<lj-embed id="1" />

NORFOLK WON. <strike>we did have a slight advantage as i think we have a couple of extra blocks!</strike> also there were international students (in black) and some imposters from Colman House (in yellow) Norfolk was the clear winner though, of course.

can't actually see myself in the video though :3

Exam one out of two is over and gone <strike>till resits? hahahaha</strike> Luckily for you all I don't really have the energy to go into it now but basically I had to do two essays, the first of which was nearly twice as long as the second (because me being me I didn't think to split my time up properly!) I feel like it went okay but I can never tell with essays. Feeling fairly positive though!

I might go buy yummy food and then try to catch up on summerwrite.
