Teen Wolf: A Summary

So there's this show, right, that totallybalanced has forced me to watch?

It's called Teen Wolf, and from the title, you can probably guess what it's about... a teenager who gets turned into a werewolf, and has to deal with everything that follows (as well as his love life, school, and the Alpha Wolf that's moved in and is killing people left right and centre...) From what I've heard, a lot of people watched the pilot some time last summer, thought it was rubbish, and gave in on it.

BAD MOOOOOOVE.

Yes, the first season is a bit silly and all over the place. Yes, the main character's single-mindedness will start to grate. But somewhere along the line, when you're just waiting for Scott to whine for the thirty-fifth time that episode about Allison or lacrosse, you realise that you're actually really invested in these characters, and they're actually causing you to have real emotions, and why isn't it Monday again yet?

Scott McCall (Tyler Posey)

Scott is a dork who plays lacrosse but can't make first string. His father left the family when Scott was younger and he lives with his mother, a nurse at the local hospital with a hands-off approach to parenting. He is turned into a werewolf in the first episode and at the same time meets Allison, and immediately falls in love with her.
He's a fairly competent werewolf, and his newly-enhanced speed and strength get him promoted to the lacrosse team's first string. Once that happens, Scott's thought processes can be easily summarised thus: ALLISON. LACROSSE. ALLISON. ALLISON. LACROSSE. ALLISON.

Stiles Stilinski (Dylan O'Brien)

Stiles isn't his first name; he was named after his maternal grandfather and whilst his real name hasn't actually been revealed, apparently it's funny enough to send Coach Finstock into hysterical giggles. His mother died after a protracted time in hospital and he lives with his father, the local sheriff and the only sane man in the whole town.
Stiles has ADHD and has had an unrequited crush on Lydia since third grade. He's also extremely intelligent, spends most of his time trying to stop Scott from killing people and researching various lore, and generally looking after the pack.

Allison Argent (Crystal Reed)

Allison is the new girl in town, and is a year older than the rest of the main cast because she moves around a lot due to his family's business; though whilst she initially believes this is as arms merchants, it's actually because they're hunters. Allison used to practice archery when she was younger and her recent initiation into the world of the supernatural has prompted her to pick up the bow again.
Her relationship with Scott becomes something of a point of contention between her and her parents once they discover that he is a werewolf, but they find ways around it.

Derek Hale (Tyler Hoechlin)

Derek is a genetic werewolf who came back to Beacon Hills to search for his sister, Laura. The rest of his family (bar one uncle, the family's Alpha) were killed when the Hale House was set on fire with them inside. As a more experienced werewolf, he mentors Scott throughout the first season, and then goes on to form his own pack in the second season.
He shares something of a love-hate relationship with Stiles. Whilst his default expression is grumpy, he has saved the younger members of the pack many times and will often protect them.

(He spends most of the first season lurking in the corners of bedrooms.)

Lydia Martin (Holland Roden)

Lydia initially comes across as the stupid alpha bitch, but she's actually incredibly intelligent and dumbs herself down a lot. Her parents are rich, she's popular, and she's dating the lacrosse captain... and then it all goes downhill when she has a run-in with the Alpha Wolf who's terrorising the neighbourhood.
Following the encounter her confidence drops and she becomes something of an outcast herself, and is finally brought into the secret world through a series of terrifying hallucinations.

Jackson Whittemore (Colton Haynes)

Jackson is the captain of the lacrosse team and all-around general douchebag who makes it his mission to find out Scott's secret in the first season, eventually demanding that he be given the bite himself. He's basically the biggest jerk in the series - but at the same time, painfully sympathetic. He is constantly trying to prove himself to the parents that he never met (he was adopted) and has an overwhelming urge to be the best at everything. His character arc in the second season is utterly heartbreaking.

Chris Argent (JR Bourne)

Chris is the ultimate over-protective father of Allison. Whilst initially he is out to get Scott, he eventually sees that he would do anything to protect Allison and genuinely loves her. He's still not happy that they're having sex, but he'll work with him and the pack against a common enemy.

Other Characters of Notable Mention:
Danny - goalie on the lacrosse team and Jackson's best friend; dangerously close to becoming aware of the supernatural goings-on in the town.
Scott's Mom - a long-suffering nurse at the local hospital who is constantly exasperated with Scott.
Stiles' Dad - the sheriff of Beacon Hills. He loves his son, is devoted to his job and does the best that he can with both.
Gerard Argent - Allison's grandfather, a veteran hunter who arrives in season two to wreak havoc on the werewolf population.
The Veterinarian - Scott's boss, who is involved with the supernatural and treats the wolves when they're too injured to heal normally.
Kate Argent - Allison's aunt who comes to town to help with the werewolf situation.
Peter Hale - Derek's uncle, horrifically injured during the Hale fire and hospitalised.
Coach Finstock - the economics teacher and lacrosse coach. Possibly insane, but good at his job.
Isaac Lahey - the first of Derek's new pack; horrendously abused by his father.
Erica Reyes - the second of Derek's new pack; ostracised and bullied all her life due to her epilepsy, which disappears when she receives the bite.
Boyd - the third of Derek's new pack.

The cast are quite silly sometimes, really.

In fact, it's not just the cast. The show is ridiculous sometimes:

...but even when it's being ridiculous it still manages to make your chest ache, and wonder if the characters are actually going to survive because surely, one of them will run out of luck, and it keeps you guessing and it keeps you watching and wanting more.

And it should definitely be given a chance.

It also made me desperately want to watch Watership Down again.

Potentially the gayest H50 opener ever. I mean, we've got "babe", Mary instinctively knowing that they'd be together, Steve flat-out ignoring Danny's request for coffee, Mary thinking that they're cute, and jfc Danny being sensitive about being relegated to "surf buddies".

And I'm only 4 minutes in.

Also the cake-in-the-boot. Steve's face was so cute. NOT TO MENTION THE GRENADE!CAKE AND STEVE'S DETERMINATION TO EAT IT DESPITE IT BEING GROSS. This whole episode was just painfully cute.

Which is not to mention Mary, who I love, and whose moments with Steve I love, and the ending to the episode was brilliant, and just the whole 42 minutes made me immensely happy.

I woke up to the sounds of the pouring rain and the air con as one of the other girls in my hostel room went out for a run. I woke from an extremely bizarre H50 dream on which Danny had been "infected" and was out of sorts, and it was revealed that his body was covered with turquoise symbols that only showed up under a blacklight.

I'm halfway across the world, living out of a backpack, and all I want to do is write H50 conspiracy!fic.

Travelling: I'm doing it wrong.

AND THAT'S ALL THAT I HAVE LEFT TO DO. And I don't think that's too bad, really. My flight to Sydney is now booked for the 1st of November, and I'll be flying out from Manchester. Mother is now considerably less stressy about the whole thing, now that so much of it is booked and organised.

It's weird, though. I'm booked into a hostel in Sydney; I'm booked into a hostel in Auckland, and Nadi. I will be booking into one in Cairns, and I will either be in a hostel or at Mike's for Christmas. Hostels are the way forward (and at £4 a night there's really no competition).

But.

BUT.

THERE ARE NO HOSTELS IN HONOLULU.

I HAVE HAD TO BOOK MYSELF INTO A HOTEL.

Which I am in two minds about because one, oh my god I have a whole week of having a nice room all to myself oh my god the luxury but on the other hand, it's like really expensive in comparison to other places. United States, y u no geared towards backpackers? :((((

But yes. I leave on the 1st of November; that's only 25 days away. I'm excited.

To be fair, he isn't complaining about it.

Also, H50 2.03 happened...

...and I still can't decide if I like Lori or not... I just don't think I like the constant sniping between her and Steve, because that's a Steve&Danny thing, and yes I am going to get stroppy if I think that someone is moving in on my ship. I guess I'll have to wait a few more episodes and see.

The Kono thing seems a little off to me too - she's gone far off the rails, and fast, and it seems very out of character. My only hope is that she wasn't actually dismissed from the force, but it's all a pretence from higher up to get her to infiltrate her new boss's organisation and bring it down from the inside. That's what I'm going with, anyway.

One thing that I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVED was the whole deal with "Strawberry Field" and the team watching the SEAL operation at the end, and Danny's reaction, as though he's seeing Steve for the first time. Like, he knows that Steve was a SEAL, he knows vaguely the sorts of things that SEALs do, he knows Steve and his shoot first ask questions later attitude, but he never quite saw him the way that he does now. Like he almost wanted to pretend that Steve wasn't as dangerous and utterly lethal as he really is, because whilst he sometimes seems a little gung-ho and crazy (okay, always seems that way) he's actually toning it down an awful lot.

I just really liked those scenes, the sheer panic in Steve's face and the way that his voice cracked when Danny mentioned "Strawberry Field" and the way that he seemed completely locked down after that. I feel the desperate urge to write fic now.
