[The Americans] "Not an anti-hero," continued by [dreamwidth.org profile] jae
One trend in media commentary on the first season of The Americans was to lump Philip and Elizabeth Jennings in with the protagonists of various shows in the anti-hero mold, like Tony Soprano of The Sopranos or Walter White of Breaking Bad (Elizabeth especially gets a lot of “ooh, it’s a female anti-hero!” sort of buzz). It strikes me that this only works, though, if you insist on viewing the show through an exclusively American lens.

[Almost Human] Almost Human, and Writing the Future by Dan Wells
The problem, of course, is that Almost Human isn't trying to build a science-fictional world, they're trying to tell cop stories with a science fiction twist.
I agree with his critique. I love sci-fi but I am bored stiff by conventional buddy-cop shows. Almost Human is unwatchable for me. (And then there was that icky sexbot episode early on.)

[Banshee] I made a Banshee tumblr because I have fallen head over heels in love with the stupid show and need more content. *draws hearts around it* Come talk to me about Banshee!

Safer sex and contraception in fanfic by [dreamwidth.org profile] naraht
So I thought I would bring the discussion up to date by asking what my circle thinks of the topic.
My own feeling is that there are three main motives that are relevant to writers when it comes to depicting, or not depicting, safe sex and/or contraception:
1) Sending the right message to readers
2) Sexiness of the scene
3) Realism and/or accurate characterization

[FIC] The Thrill of Hypothermia | Derek/Stiles

I can finally reveal my tw_holidays fic.

The Thrill of Hypothermia (1757 words) by acari
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Relationships: Derek Hale/Stiles Stilinski
Additional Tags: Huddling For Warmth, Sleepy Cuddles, Hypothermia, Future Fic, Kissing, First Kiss, Cuddling & Snuggling, Fluff
Summary:

Stiles yawned and shifted back against Derek's chest. He arranged Derek's arm across his chest for maximum coverage and shoved his icy feet between Derek's shins. Stiles could certainly emphasize with Luke Skywalker wanting to cuddle up to the steamy intestines of his snow beast. Derek sure was lucky Stiles had no lightsaber available at present.

I stopped watching a whole host of shows. I started watching the first new Homeland episode but I just did not care. I watched the Sleepy Hollow pilot and hated it. I never went back to Nashville, Legend of Korra or The Paradise. I watched a few episodes of The Blacklist and Hostages but dropped both for lack of interest. I will probably finish Hostages once the season is finished just to see how it ends. I watched ten minutes of Ironside, but police brutality won't get better if the brutal cop is in a wheelchair. Sorry, Blair Underwood, not even for you.

I'm still watching The Good Wife. I loved this season of Some Girls. I still love The Great British Bake-Off. Masterchef Junior US was super adorable.

I give Almost Human two, maybe three more episodes before I bail. spoilersCollapse )

There's enough people slagging on BBC Sherlock on a regular basis about its Sherlock being an asshole that when I found watching it seriously uncomfortable, I sort of assumed that was it. [...] And I realized the thing that makes me uncomfortable is not Sherlock, or how he's written, but John Watson and how he's written.

World War II Combat Movie Recs by [personal profile] sansets

According to sgamadison there's something fishy going on with some ebook publishers.
Amazon (as well as most of the other e-book distributors like Kobo, etc) has decided to make sweeping changes to its publishing policy and is taking down titles wholesale--not just from sale, but according to some people, off their Kindles as well. I find it particularly interesting that this is aimed only at INDEPENDENT authors.

[dreamwidth.org profile] chaila on Myth and Deconstruction in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
But TSCC spins off from its action movie franchise roots to tell a deeply human story that interrogates the basis of all "hero myth" type stories. What I want to focus on in this post are these deconstructive elements, the way TSCC explicitly and implicitly challenges the themes and tropes common in similar stories about "one chosen hero destined to save the world."
