the one bad thing about waiting to see really hyped movies until that hype has died down is that if i find they're as great as everyone says, there's no one around who'd really want to listen to me rave about the nuances since they've already been explored over and over. errrr.
i saw a ton of movies while in memphis. many thanks to the patience of jacques and amber and the rest of the memphis peer group (they'd already seen these)--24 hour party people, army of darkness (can you believe i've never seen it before? my sister had before me even), this really silly kiss video (ah, it makes me laugh now to even mention it, all those finger gestures and flounces of pink lycra), oh what else...and then we saw following (which i thoroughly enjoyed), donnie darko, spiderman (justin had not yet seen it), the league of extraordinary gentlemen, how to lose a guy in 10 days (i know i know...but it was neat to hang out with justin's mom as she watched it. she's so great. and for some reason watching that movie reminded me of julia, like. something she'd have dragged me to when we were 14...she liked romantic comedies and was unabashed about it), what else...we also saw episodes of i'm with busey, monk, that one law and order justin likes (it was about a guy with aspberger's syndrome, which made it intriguing for me), the chappelle show (again, justin hadn't seen it), south park, and family guy. oh and the fox sunday night cartoons, sleepily. and oh, all those wonderful libraries. the memphis central branch on poplar had like all of mishima's major works, and a philosophy section centered about the romantics and postmodernists. kant and wittgenstein and dilthey even streamed from shelf to shelf...
i got home and michelle actually rented 24hpp and so i've now seen it like five times in a row. i wish i knew someone who'd just seen it for the first time too, to compare notes and giggle. i keep saying something like "(likeably) flawed and fun." mm.
hanging out with jacques is a good way to be reminded to take out tried and true albums and get thrilled and giddy about them all over again...lately i've been so into it'sgoingonrightrightnow records (ie like the rest of the universe, that postal service one...saw the video for "such great heights" and it kickstarted that enthusiasm from early spring) i've failed to remember that much of the best stuff is long gone.
i even decided to upgrade the durutti column i do have to a lusher catalogue (it's all dubbed tapes for me right now!). mmmm.
