Thanks for posting, letty. I like the music. I have never watched that version of Last of, but I read the book many moons ago and watched at least one film of it. The Natty Bumpo series was very exciting when I was young, up to The Prairie, and I don't recall much of that one.

I once read a large volume of Jack London's short stories. This one and the one about a fighter and a piece of meat still stand out in my memory. And the one in which the old one was left by the people to die on the ice.

"Tom Dooley" is an old North Carolina folk song based on the 1866 murder of a woman named Laura Foster in Wilkes County, North Carolina. It is best known today because of a hit version recorded in 1958 by The Kingston Trio. This version was a multi-format hit, reaching #1 in Billboard, the Billboard R&B listing, and appearing in the Cashbox country music top 20. It fits within the wider genre of Appalachian 'sweetheart murder ballad' songs such as 'Down in the Willow Garden' and 'Rose Connelly', but 'Tom Dooley' is based on a real event.

Not only a true story, but Little Joe Cartwright, of Bonanza fame, played Tom Dooley in a movie. I have a CD of almost all of the Kingston Trio's great songs - several CDs. What is missing is the song, Coplas, due to not wishing to offend Mexicans. Also missing are the performances of a new group calling itself The Kingston Trio, but not on my list of people I listen to.
