His "list of Communists in the Dept of the Army" was a delusion, and he died a few years later during delirium tremens of alcoholism related liver failure. However legitimate his "concerns" were of Communists in woodwork, his charges and evidence were lies, slander, libel, whole-cloth, bunkum, fake, put-up, delerious ..... well, you get it. Or would if you were educated.

What is really ironic is how the extreme right in America like to quote George Orwell. Orwell remained a committed Socialist all his life, and had he had the misfortune of being born American would definitely have faced McCarthy's Special Committee on Un-American Activities.

Animal Farm ends with,

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

Orwell's criticism of Stalin's Russia wasn't that it was worse than capitalism, but that it was exactly the same.
