Quote:NATO summit drawing out-of-state police
(United Press International, May 15, 2012)
Chicago police say they have recruited officers from several cities across the country to assist in handling protesters expected for this weekend's NATO summit.
Officers from Philadelphia, Milwaukee and Charlotte, N.C., will join Illinois state troopers and suburban police in keeping demonstrations from turning violent, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Tuesday.
Milwaukee said it is sending 100 officers while Philadelphia has offered 68 members of its police force.
The number of police coming to Chicago from Charlotte-Mecklenburg was not immediately available.
Chicago Police spokesman Melissa Stratton refused to reveal how many out-of-state officers were expected or why those three cities were chosen, the newspaper said.
Stratton said utilizing out-of-state officers for special security events is not unusual.
Last month the Sun-Times reported that as many as 500 Illinois State Police officers would assist Chicago in handling the NATO summit.
I work a block away from the Daley Center, which is where a lot of the protests are supposed to occur (the plaza is a good place to start or end a march), even though the summit itself is at McCormick Place, which is over a mile away on the lakefront. We've been getting regular reports from the city, basically telling everyone to stay away from the Loop starting this Friday and going through Monday.
As Homer Simpson would say: "Woohoo! Four-day weekend!"
Homer lives in Chicago? I didn't know that.
How can the protestors do anything not nice in President Obama's home turf? Plus, isn't the current mayor of Chicago that one time Obama associate Rom Emanuel? In my opinion, it sounds like a possible disconnect with gratitude for the President's home turf, and loyal associates?
Doesn't everyone understand that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was a stalwart ally during the Cold War years also?
Put down the bong pipe, Jason.
Tonight at 6:00 p.m (Chicago time) NATO opponents and NATO supporters face off in a debate at Chicago's Pritzker Military Library. Representing the pro-NATO side will be Ambassador J.D. Vindenagel and political science professor John Allen Williams. On the anti-NATO side will be Iris Feliciano from Iraq Veterans Against the War and Rick Rozoff from the Stop NATO website.
There will be a live a webcast at this site:

My father is a Federal officer, and he is going to be in Chicago as part of the anti-riot control teams. I hope the protester's behave themselves, I don't need my dad getting hurt.
Last night's panel debate on whether there is a need for NATO:
Hopefully this works out better for Chicago than the G-20 Summit did 2 years ago in Toronto.
45 officers are about to be charged for their activity here.

I believe all charges against protestors have finally been dropped.
Why they have to have these events, and have them in cities, I do not understand.
Don't politicians know about teleconferences and Skype? how about plopping them all on an island somewhere they won't interfere with, well, anything?

Maybe NATO wants to offer more transparency to the public?
Anyway, right now I am about one mile from where a huge demonstration will be at noon. Sometimes news event photos become available instantly on the internet. I will try to post something.

what? they're not in a building behind a security cordon in an area that people are told to stay away from?
they can livestream the proceedings from anywhere - more cost effective, less disruptive to thousands of people
National Nurses United is rallying at the Daley Center right now.
