Urban Dictionary: India

Found these gems here.

INDIA

- Where every company outsources our jobs to.
"Thank you for calling HP, please hold while we transfer you to a customer service representative."

- India is a country.
Women: What is India?
Man: Bitch, it's a country.

- ... PPL DISSING INDIA ARE FREAKIN JEALOUS BECAUSE INDIA IS FILLED WITH SMART PEOPLE AND ARE TAKIN AWAY ALL THE JOBS FROM AMERICA AND CANADA...WELL ITS NOT INDIAS FAULT THAT ITS A BETTER COUNTRY.

- India is a place where i happen to be born, it is my country, and my identity. Wherever the world i go, i am an Indian. And i want to clear some stereotypes about India

1) Tigers do not roam in Indian streets. In fact at the rate at which poaching is going on, you would be lucky to find a tiger in a forest.

2) India is not just a land of nawabs, maharajas and beggars. It also has a very strong, educated middle class, who are like the middle class in any other nation. Most of these middle class people, work in Govt offices, factories, software companies, MNC's, universities. I belong to that Great Indian middle class.

2) Not all of India is a hot country. No other nation has such diversity in climate. The southern part of India is humid and hot, the northern part of India is hot and dry. The Himalayan states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal have a cold and temperate climate. The Western states of Gujarat and Rajasthan, have a desert kind of climate.

3) Probably one of the few countries where you can find the Alps( Himalayas), the Sahara( Thar Desert), the Congo(numerous forests) and the Riveira( Goa) all in one place. A place of natural diversity and beauty.

4) India has 26 languages, 320 dialects and no two states are alike. Yet it has managed to be united still, unlike Europe where countries keep splitting, and Africa, which has become a collection of tribes rather than countries.

5) Indian men are often portrayed as sex starved frustrated beasts, ready to pounce on women, and especially foreign woman. There have been deplorable cases of rape and assault for sure, but not every Indian guy is a sex starved maniac. India is not more dangerous than S.Africa or Afghanistan when it comes to women.

6) Indian women suffer from many problems sure, like female foeticide, rape, gender discrimination. But things are changing for the better. A considerable number of Indian women go to work, run businesses, are CEO's of companies, drive buses and trains, fight in the army, fly planes, teach, nurse. In some cases they form cooperatives also. And there is a strong feminist movement in India still.

7) Not all Indians are curry eaters nor all Indians are vegetarians. Yes many Indians do not eat beef, but thats only the Hindu community. Indian Muslims and Indian Christians do eat beef. Even in the Hindu community, while many communities do not eat beef, they do consume other non veg items like poultry and meat. In the Eastern states of West Bengal and Orissa, fish is a staple item of diet.

8) Notwithstanding Gujarat,2002 and the Graham Staines incident, India still remains a secular country. Muslims have more rights in India, than in any other Muslim majority nation. This is a country which has had 3 Presidents from Muslim community, where the missile and nuclear program was headed by a Muslim, where a Jew and a Christian headed the defence forces. This is a nation where 3 Muslim actors- Aamir, Shahrukh and Salman are the top most heroes, and a Muslim headed the Indian cricket team. Walk into any MNC in India, and you find Muslims, Christians, Hindus working side by side. Yes we do have our prejudices and biases, but show me one nation in the world which does not have it.

9) While India has the Moral keystone cops indulging in moral policing, most of em are jerks seeking 15 minutes of fame. They are certainly not like the Taliban, which simply executes people who do not believe in it's warped sense of the world.

10) To date India has never invaded any country, but it has always given a fitting reply to any nation that tried to attack it. The Indian Army has been rated as one of the world's most disciplined army, and even in war torn areas like Iraq, Bosnia, Somalia, the Indian Army always earned respect. Because they built bridges with the local people.

11) Not all Indian movies are song and dance affairs. There are directors like Anurag Kashyap, Vishaal Bharadwaj, Nagesh Kukunoor, Madhur Bhandarkar, Maniratnam, Ram Gopal Verma who are equivalent to the best anywhere in the world.

India is not the world's most perfect country. We have our own issues and they are many. But we certainly are not an exotic nation of tigers, elephants and maharajas. We are a nation that is trying to achieve a balance between tradition and modernity, between order and chaos, between the old and new. And on top of it, we have to deal with caste, class, language and regional differences.

I request all people in the West to look at India as not just an exotica place, but a country filled with living people. We are just like you, we also have the same dreams and desires like you, we also suffer from same problems. As an Indian, i only want to ask one thing, please dont look at our country as exotica, we are asking you to understand our problems and our issues.

And finally, my favorite -

Pakistan and India should be tight, we share so much similarities.

The Mumbai attacks

I have been following the Mumbai situation through the NDTV live feed. I am still too stunned to say anything about it. Let's just say that it makes me really, really worried for all my friends and family back in India. The worst part was hearing the terrorist talk to the media.

I know this makes no sense but I feel guilty in a way for being safe here while all my loved ones are in danger.

One uplifting moment was the crowd cheering when the NSG arrived at the Taj. It left me in tears.

I salute all the officers who lost their lives fighting the terrorists and hope their sacrifice is never forgotten.

वन्दे मातरम्

I did a friends cut today. This feels bad every single time. But I know it is needed when I start skipping entries on my flist. Maybe we just stopped clicking somewhere along the way?

I know those who I've cut will agree with me on this. Nothing personal(err, you know what I mean) and I wish you all the best!

p.s. - Whoa, where did all you new friends come from? Please comment on this post if you added me but never let me know. I hardly post any public entries, so there's no point in having me friended unless you tell me!

So I wasn't originally going to take part in this. But yeah, the only problem I had with livejournal was the interest blocking thing. And apparently, they have taken that back.

So they are noticing it, eh? Well, no harm in trying it.

More information here

An email that was forwarded to me

A Proposal to End All Religious Arguments
It's becoming increasingly difficult to do anything without running into a pointless religious argument. Because these arguments never go anywhere, I say it's high time to put an end to them. However, due to the level of passion that people hold for their religion, this won't happen without compromise. This is my proposal:

For Christians

 1. America is not a "Christian country."

First and foremost, 100% of the United States population doesn't believe in Christianity. Until the day that this statistic is achieved, kindly shut the hell up.

 2. The Constitution comes before the Bible.

"I have a problem with people who take the Constitution loosely and the Bible literally." - Bill Maher

Regardless of what the Bible says, while you live in this life, you will follow the rules of the country you live in. Secular law is sovereign. If you have a problem with this, you're more than welcome to hurry yourself to the next life so you can follow Biblical law exclusively.

 3. Keep your nose out of other peoples' business!

Simply put, your ethics and political views don't license you to dictate the personal lives of other people.

If you're anti-abortion, don't get an abortion. If you're opposed to same-sex marriage, don't marry someone of the same sex. If you don't want other people to have abortions or same-sex marriages, TOUGH SHIT! It's their right to do those things; like it or not.

 4. Religion is not a basis for enforcing a policy.

This one goes out to a number of political figures (Mike Huckabee, George W. Bush, George H. W. Bush, et al.):

Your personal beliefs, in a democracy or a republic, should never restrict the rights of others. Since we live in the United States, which is a federal constitutional republic, the justification of unconstitutional laws with the religious views of one person is a threat to freedom and should not be allowed.

 5. Keep your religion away from the throats of others.

Before you discuss religion with anyone, ask them if they're interested in hearing your bullshit. If they say, "No," it doesn't mean you are authorized to continue forcing your beliefs down their throat. Forcing your beliefs onto others is the equivalent of theological rape.

 6. Research unverified claims.

A large majority of Americans would not vote for a qualified Atheist President (link). This is because of an unverified belief that atheists are immoral; which is utterly unacceptable.

Instead of basing your votes on superficial qualifications (religion, gender, political party, race, age, etc.), why not base your vote on something concrete? I'd rather have a competent President than a Christian president of lesser competence; would you disagree?

For Muslims

 1. Stop trying to enforce Sharia law.

As I just finished saying to the Christians, secular law is sovereign. You're free to follow whatever laws you wish, but don't force them onto other people. To do so is a violation of their basic human liberties.

 2. Stop blaming everything on the Jews.

There are more Muslims than Jews in the world; you can't blame all of your hardships on them. Shut the fuck up and take responsibility for your own predicaments. (This only really applies to the radicals.)

For the "Church" of Scientology
No compromise for you. You aren't a religion, you're a cult. Crash and burn, you fascist bastards!

For Atheists

 1. Let History remain intact.

I am in support of laws preventing new court houses from displaying the Bible's 10 Commandments, but I am adamantly opposed from removing existing ones. Why?

Two words: Historical value.

 2. Unless your rights are being stepped on, shut the fuck up.

If Congress ever passed a law requiring all students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, then I might relate to removing "Under God" from the oath. Since that is not the case, and you are not required to recite it, stop wasting our time with irrelevant bullshit.

Ok. So I am looking for a new layout. Any suggestions?

Also, anyone got link to that black and pink and green layout by <strike>someone with a username like reversicollide or something similar?</strike>.

Ok, I don't know who made it. But, it is a verrry basic kinds layout. The bg is black and there are these strips running in pink/green to divide entries. And pink/green borders around the icons. Grrrr.. I am hopeful because the layout is one which is pretty popular and the layout maker is popular too.

Comment to this post saying something - anything - about me. I'll then put it all in my profile! This means that you can say I eat babies, and it will still go up to describe me to the world. Then post this in your journal, so we can do the same thing for you! You can absolutely post anything about me.

Friends cut. Either the journal was dead. Or I skipped your posts. And you skipped mine, for sure. Or I was kinda scared(or excited?) that you might comment on the honesty meme I posted yesterday. :P

All the best. No hard feelings. Take me off your flists if you want to. No drama please(I know I am not THAT important to you anyways)

Blogathon 07

Hey guys. I am participating in the blogathon this year. It's on the 28th of July.

Blogathon - "First some terminology: "blog" is a shortened version of "weblog" which is a frequently updated personal website. Most blogs have date stamps on the entries, and consist of links and commentary.

Now, remember when you were in school and you would bowl for charity? And for every pin you knocked down you got, say, ten cents? Or run for a dollar a mile? During the Blogathon, people update their websites every 30 minutes for 24 hours straight. For this, they collect sponsorships. Pledges can be a flat donation, or a certain amount for every hour the blogger manages to stay awake."

I am really, really kicked about it. It feels good to know that you are contributing, even if in a small way. Friend my blogathon blog if you want to give me some support. Also, sponsor me if you feel like. All good either ways.

The details -

Name: Aastha

Blogathon blog: aaskie_blog

Blogging for: India Literacy Project

Why I chose my charity:
aastha: yeah. He keeps asking us to read him stories. He loves books. Can't afford going to a school though.
K: :\ that's horrible
aastha: hey, I know which charity I should blog for, something which does something for literacy in India?
K: ooooh, that would be awesome
aastha: http://www.ilpnet.org/
aastha: them
aastha: yay!
K: wooot
aastha: Makes me feel guilty sometimes. I am thinking of going abroad for higher studies, which'll cost my parents a bomb. And there are people who can't even read.

My plans for blogathon: I plan to make graphics for people who sponsor me and people who can't sponsor me but are around for moral support anyways.

Sponsor me: Here
