Suit claims singer beaned Shoreline concertgoer in the head with energy drink

Mosh pits at monster rock concerts can be dangerous, according to a lawsuit by a Monterey woman.

Nina Kooroshfar claims she was hit in the head by a canned energy drink after it was tossed from the stage by the lead singer of the All-American Rejects at last year's Van's Warped Tour at Shoreline Amphitheater.

Kooroshfar's forehead was permanently scarred by the resulting laceration, according to her lawsuit. Among others, she is suing Monster Beverage Co., the producer of the Warped tour, Live Nation, which owns Shoreline, and Tyson Ritter, the lead singer and bassist for the band.

Filed June 24, the lawsuit alleges that Monster Beverage and Hansen Natural Corp. instructed Ritter to throw large cans of the drink into the audience as promotion at the June 26, 2010, event.

Kooroshfar "did not reasonably expect the large drink to be thrown at her at the time and could not avoid being hit by the can thrown by Ritter," the suit states.

She was treated at the venue and received 12 stitches at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. The suit asks unspecified general and punitive damages for negligence, assault and battery.

( via )

donthateonhaiti contest and win a skype session with the Rejects

<lj-embed id="125" />

So, we have been writing relentlessly for the last year and are hitting the studio to lay down the tracks for our fourth record soon. My last year has been devoted to music and my charity, donthateonhaiti.org. So far, we have donated about $25,000 to Charity:Water, a true not-for-profit organization that builds clean water projects across the world. Every $5,000 we generate builds a clean water well in Haiti.

To coincide with our going into the studio the band and I have decided to have a contest to help maximize our efforts to generate cash for the cause. So here’s the idea:

Whoever raises the most money for donthateonhaiti.org by March,15 of this year will win the following sweet ass prizes.

1. A one-on-one skype session with you and the band in the studio to talk about tunes, the charity, what you ate for lunch, whatever you want!!
2. A guitar signed by the band
3. A Don’t Hate On Haiti shirt signed by the band

All you have to do to win is spread the love and raise as much dough as you can. Once we have all the monies counted and collected, we will announce the winner on all our our social networking outlets.

Send all contributions to:
c/o Dont Hate On Haiti
P.O. Box 4084
Santa Monica, CA 90411

Attach your contact information so we can reach you if you’re the lucky winner!!
Good luck!!!

Tyson Ritter
The All-American Rejects

( via )

A somewhat bad review of Warped for Mississauga, ON (jul 9)

(...) By the time I got to The All-American Rejects' set, I was about ready to have a nap on the pavement. That might explain my annoyance with singer/bassist Tyson Ritter, but I think it's really his overblown rockstar persona that did me in.

Normally, I love The All-American Rejects and Ritter usually comes across as the cute-but-dorky guy who's too shy to ask his crush out. So I don't know what Kool-Aid he was drinking that was causing him to drop F-bombs every other word and tell all the fans who had stuck around for AAR's set they were boring for not moshing, but it apparently caused him to think he's a lot more hardcore than he really is.

The All-American Rejects played mostly well-known singles, including the incredibly old-school "Swing, Swing," but Ritter ruined "Dirty Little Secret," one of my favorite AAR songs, by calling all the preteen girls in the audience "dirty little bitches" while introducing it. So what could have been a great show was pretty much ruined by the jackass rockstar who calls himself a vocalist.

( source )

All-American Rejects humbled by success

The All-American Rejects, with Mike Kennerty, far left, headline the Vans Warped Tour, which stops July 15 at Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain in Scranton and July 16 at Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, N.J.

The All-American Rejects had the most-played song in all of 2009 with its hit "Gives You Hell," according to Billboard magazine. And with the album that spawned the song, "When The World Comes Down," heading toward platinum, the band is quickly nearing 4 million copies sold for its three albums.

But don't expect the pop- punk band from Stillwater, Okla., to have an inflated sense of self over its success.

"Coming up in Oklahoma, there's like humbleness ingrained into you and I don't think we could [avoid that]," Rejects' guitarist Mike Kennerty says in a recent telephone interview from Los Angeles. "We would get too much [flak] from all our family and friends if we ever let any of this go to our heads."

It's that attitude that led The All-American Rejects to perform at this year's Vans Warped Tour, the summer festival that typically features breaking or underground bands.

The tour, which features 73 bands, including hot emo singer NeverShoutNever and pop-punkers The Rocket Summer, will makes stops Thursday at Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain in Scranton and Friday at Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, N.J.

After playing Warped in 2003 and 2005 to promote its first two discs, which produced the hits "Swing Swing" "and "Dirty Little Secret," the Rejects were scheduled to headline the show in 2008, but backed out when the recording of "When The World Comes Down" ran too late, Kennerty says.

Then last year, the band was tapped to open for blink-182's reunion tour and couldn't join Warped, now in its 16th year.

"We felt bad ever since," Kennerty says, laughing. "And so like, 'All right, this is the year we're going to do it again. We're free.' We've always had fun; we've always had a blast on it. It's a great time."

In fact, Kennerty says the Rejects still don't feel successful —even though he, singer/bassist Tyson Ritter, lead guitarist Nick Wheeler and drummer Chris Gaylor have amassed five Top 20 pop singles.

"It's pretty mind-blowing," Kennerty says. "But honestly, when we're just in the midst of it, it's tough to really get perspective on it. I don't know, we just kind of do what feels right."

Being "in the midst of it" includes playing at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, and at an after-party at the Super Bowl. It also means receiving the new pop coronation of having a song — in the band's case "Gives You Hell" — sung by cast members on the massively popular FOX-TV show "Glee."

Kennerty says the "Glee" exposure "was particularly insane."

"I was just at home and I heard news it was coming on, so I DVR'd it. And then when I watched it, it was … just a weird moment. A year and a half ago, I was working on that song and, like, know exactly the gestation and where it came from. And to seeing this huge TV show do their interpretation of it, it was very bizarre but awesome."

He says the Olympics show was "pretty cool" because it "was such a mix of demographics from around the world all together."

Despite its success, the band isn't content to rest on its laurels. After taking nearly 3 1/2 years on "When The World Comes Down," the Rejects are working on a follow-up, which they hope to release by the beginning of next year.

"We're starting to get the songs together right now and we're going to try to continue while we're on Warped," he says. "And then, hopefully, right afterward go and hit the studio and start putting some stuff down.

Asked how the new songs sound, Kennerty says the band never sets out to produce a certain sound.

"Each of our records … there's always just this sort of little bit of evolution that just happens from becoming a couple years older and not really caring what comes out – just writing what comes out," he says. "And so there's things already that I think are going to make it unique from the other albums, but still us very much."

Speaking of aging, Kennerty is reminded he turns 30 this year, and Gaylor's already hit the bench mark. He says aging hasn't changed the band's outlook.

"But in an environment like Warped Tour, it's going to be really interesting," he says, "When we first did that tour, we were the new, young kids. And it can be a very clique-y tour in a way – you go to sit down at catering and there's just these groups of people and you can definitely tell the veterans and all this stuff.

"It's really weird – looking at the lineup this year, all the big bands are like our friends. And we're going to be those band this time," he says, laughing. "And there's going to be all these young kids that are probably like, 'Oh, all those big bands just hang out together. They don't hang out with anyone else.'

"It's not that," he says, laughing again. "We grew up with these other bands, too. It's a funny thing to now be the old guys on the tour."

( source )

Besides getting the chance to play and entice new fans, bands like Motion City Soundtrack also use the tour as an opportunity to catch up with old friends and promote a good cause.

"We've been friends with The All-American Rejects for a long time, so it is always fun to see them play and hang out," bassist Matt Taylor said. ( source )

Mike Gentile of the band Hey Monday:

What bands are you excited to be on Warped Tour with this summer?

I'm really excited to see the Never Shout Never kids again and I'm excited to see Four Year Strong every day, they're one of my favorite bands. I'm excited to see the All American Rejects, growing up I was a big fan of theirs. And it'll be really cool to be able to watch them every day. There are a lot of bands who I'm looking forward to seeing and hanging out with. ( source )

Review from Dallas (03/07):

The All-American Rejects helped conclude the Dallas show with their mainstream hits. Their No. 1 hits filled up the entire set: “One More Sad Song," "Dirty Little Secret," and "Move Along” are just a few. Tyson Ritter is a show of his own, bringing dirty humor and sarcasm to his act. He called Dallas out for being too mellow, so the crowd reacted with over-zealousness and hysteria. Although AAR didn’t fit the more hardcore or punk scene that pervaded the lineup, fans seemed to appreciate their presence just the same. ( source )

Tiny bit about the show in Cleveland (08/07):

(...) Nobody got a bigger rise out of the audience than the All-American Rejects, whose melodic hooks were combined with a devil-may-care attitude. Singer-bassist Tyson Ritter, a natural-born showman, tried to beat the heat in a white suit.

“It’s party time!” Ritter declared as the band launched into its 2008 smash “Gives You Hell.” ( source )

And Montreal (10/07):

(...) Dressed like Leisure Suit Larry, All American Rejects singer Tyson Ritter led the band through a string of hits, from Swing, Swing to Gives You Hell, all the while addressing the crowd like a hyper-active Lothario. ( source )

Vans Warped Tour rocks in the Phoenix heat (29/06)

(...) There were plenty of notable sets from such bands as Motion City Soundtrack, Alkaline Trio and others, but it was pretty clear that All American Rejects were the main draw Tuesday, taking the stage just a little before 7 p.m. to a thunderous reaction from easily the biggest audience at this year's show. Front man Tyson Ritter showed his charisma early on and easily won over the audience as the Rejects performed their hits "Swing, Swing," "Dirty Little Secret," and "Gives You Hell" much to the delight of the crowd. Even though All-American Rejects weren't the last band scheduled on Tuesday, they may as well have been as most fans in attendance made their way to the exits after their set.

All American Rejects were for most fans a perfect way to end the day. Already feeling pretty zapped from spending all day in the heat, the Rejects challenged the crowd to step it up a little and power through their set along with them. The crowd responded by dancing and singing along to a set that was definitely among the best on this year's tour.

( source )

All-American Rejects on Warped Tour and Loving ELO

Tyson Ritter talks about the band's summer plans and "surreal" new music

Two days away from the launch of the Vans Warped Tour, All-American Rejects frontman Tyson Ritter is gearing up for this group's first headlining slot on the annual traveling punk rock festival. A two-time veteran of the tour, Ritter tells Rolling Stone he's looking forward to checking out the next generation of bands. He also opens up about the group's summer plans, their next album and his dream of working with ELO:

How was your very first Warped Tour?
It was surreal, man. They call it summer camp, but man I feel like it was going to rock & roll camp. You saw everything you wanted to do and everything you didn't want to do on that tour. The timing for our band was pretty crazy because our first record, we had this song called "Swing Swing," and it just started getting traction, I guess right when Warped started.

So you must have learned a lot from that. What would you say you took from it?
It's funny; I got my entire skill set on that tour. The singer from Less Than Jake taught me how to warm up my vocals properly. The singer for Bowling for Soup, he cornered me, saying, "You gotta keep your shit straight." He's like, "I know everything's great right now, but you gotta make sure people working for you are good people." You know he went a little more into detail. I mean, I didn't know shit about anything. What I really took from it was just sort of the ABCs about touring.

It sounds like the Warped Tour bands are a real community.
I think it's different now. That was almost 10 years ago. We did it in '05 after we did it in 2003. The Dropkick Murphys were still there, but it seems like as the years have passed, some of those core bands that really were the staples of what Warped Tour was about and all that, it seems like those bands are sort of gone. It's this new generation. I call it the Reverse Wig Generation of music. Most of the guys in the bands look like they have reverse wigs. You know what I mean? I just think it's great that people look like they have their hair on backwards.

Does Warped Tour still hold as much meaning to you as it did?
I don't know, I guess we always had this kinship with the true spirit of Warped Tour, and I'm hoping when we play it that spirit is still there. We'll see when I get out there.

So what do you think of the lineup this year?
You know, it's crazy. I like to say it's amazing, because I don't know any of the bands pretty much. Everclear is gonna do some dates, that's pretty great. I fucking love that band. You know I'm really excited just to see what the whole new generation is gonna rock out. I'm stoked to see that come to the new Warped Tour era. I'm going in there pretty much blind and deaf to the music. I'll turn on my ears a couple days.

Do you get inspiration from any of the other bands out there?
It's a pissing contest for me. I wanna go out there and I wanna win harder than anyone else.

That's a good motive.
We've been a touring band for so damn long, man. For 10 years we've been on the road. Every time we do an album cycle, it's usually a year and a half. We play almost 300 shows every time. I really get satisfaction out of showing these kids how to fucking do it. It's nice to be like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm the old man but watch what this old man can still do," and fuck, I'm only 26, but Jesus, it's so funny half these kids now in these bands are all tweenagers and I'm just like, "My knees hurt."

Would you say that after a certain point the tour gets grueling?
Oh man, we eat our gruel. I think what's great about touring is the fact that you unplug from reality so far. I mean. 10 years of nonstop touring, I'm a weird man in the real world. Like it's totally a drug I can't live without now, and I've been off the road for like, four months now and it's maddening, man. It's grueling, but you sort of end up having to live for it, it's sort of a catch-22 in that matter, because I don't know what I'd do without it now. It becomes your identity, you know?

Have you been working on new music?
Yeah we've been working on a whole now sort of vibe for this band. It's been sort of surreal. The sound is different. There's definitely these moments where we stray down a little bit and it's vibing a little more, instead of just straight floor-to-floor rock & roll, and it feels good, feels like something organic that we've been trying to step into for years now. I'm really excited to see this whole project come to finish.

So who's producing it?
I don't know, man. I've really been getting into ELO. We haven't even started talking to anybody yet, but somebody threw in Jeff Lynne the other day and that just sounds great. I feel like they were like, the meld of Queen and the Beatles. I feel like they just have some really good jams. I hear Jeff Lynne produces, and honestly if our jams are good enough to where he'd be like, hey let's do a couple of jams, I would be ecstatic, but I really think it's so infantile right now I can't even tell you where we're headed.

So, if you had to estimate when it would be released, what would you say?
I think next March. We're not going to just put out a record this time, I have this sort of grand idea that I've been talking to my label about. I can't really expose any details about it because it's so infant, but we're not going to do this record the way that normal people are. We're not going to shoot a video, release a single, and then do it again. We're going to do something different.

( source )

Bash Compactor: Phat Cats

Remember those pictures from last week? I found this little review/article from the evening...

(...) Simmons himself didn’t express a need for Dr. Ruth’s advice, but he was happy to explain his vegan lifestyle. “It may take a little effort for the first few weeks. Then you’ll start getting used to it and you’ll find more and more fun things to eat. ’Cause food’s a drug, and you gotta do the happy drugs rather than the sad drugs, you know what I mean?”

I wasn’t convinced, but tuxedo-clad All-American Rejects frontman Tyson Ritter seemed to find vegan fare appetizing. “How many plates of oatmeal salad do you think I could eat before the crowd sat down?” he asked me in between sips of a rum and Coke. “I’ll just start putting them in my pants… legs full of lettuce.” (...) ( via )

Oh, Tyson could you be more random?
