AAR and... Taylor Swift?

OK, so this is old news, guys, because we've been terrible at updating and keeping on top of shit. (Because AAR haven't been touring in the UK, I have naturally been thrown into a pit of despair, and spent the last six months lying in bed being TERRIBLY DEPRESSED. Trufax.)

Anyway, quite a while ago, this happened:

<lj-embed id="133" />

xrysomou and I are in a dispute (read: she's less obsessive than me about this) as to whether this is a good song, but I really enjoyed their version of it! Possibly, I have a faintly Pavlovian angst-o-meter response to Tyson singing "One day I'll be big enough that you can't hit me", but that's my own issue. (The picture on that ain't great, but the audio's just fine, jsyk.)

Yeah, so, according to various uncorroborated internet articles, Tyson and T-Swizzle were a thing.

"Taylor Swift really likes dating musicians! Not only has the country cutie gotten her claws into Harry Styles, Joe Jonas, and John Mayer, she allegedly dated the All American Rejects frontman Tyson Ritter. Taylor, 23, and Tyson, 28, reportedly began dating in December 2011, but, like the rest of her relationships, it ended up in the toilet. Apparently Taylor scared Tyson off because she was too intense, which is exactly what ended her romance with Harry." (source)

Which, you know, they're both consenting adults and what they do is their business, and it's sad that it didn't work out for them (and equally sad, of course, that people like me have nothing better to do than write lj posts about it). And at the same time - what?! I don't know whether to hope that this is total bollocks or whether to laugh my arse off - both are looking like tempting options. Then again, of course, very little publicity is bad publicity, so yay Tyson? (On a side-note, that article is hilarious for not being able to decide whose side they're on. Also, "gotten her claws into"? Really? C'mon guys, that's just catty. (If you'll pardon the pun...))

The most pressing question, of course, is... if this is true, how much stick did he get from the rest of his band about it? :D

Apparently, Tyson was of the opinion that Taylor Swift's song, "I Knew You Were Trouble", is about him, which makes it infinitely funnier. It's a good song, though - or at least, I think so, though I live with my brother, so I'm very used to hearing that my taste in music is for shit. Check it out:

<lj-embed id="134" />

(This is her performing it at the Brit awards, because the video has a whole load of extraneous nonsense in it. Also, of course, the video is only here because it might be about Tyson - this is not a Taylor Swift comm! (Though, yes, I like her stuff. Sue me. :D))

So, thoughts?

Sources for this story can be found here and here, as well as the article linked above, but none of them say much more than the first one.

Friends, ficcers, lj-ers, lend me your ears! For it is two weeks, give or take a day, til Halloween and there is FIC to be done.

Or art. Or a mix. Or anything, really. A mash-up of Tyson doing scary interpretive dance (or, as Tyson calls it, "dancing"). A zombie!Chris cake. Vampire!Nick rendered in embroidery silks on a cushion. ALL OF THESE THINGS ARE AWESOME. But they are due in two weeks, on the 31st of October, the scariest of days of the year.

As a quick aside, who among us who is planning to write fic/draw has an AO3 account, and would they be interested in posting it there, then linking to LJ rather than posting it on LJ? Because we could create an AO3 Halloween Challenge category there (I think), if people were interested, and have them archived there. Anyone have any thoughts or feelings on this?

Anyway, yes! TWO WEEKS, MY FRIENDS. TWO WEEKS!

Ooooo Mike and Chris interview!

http://www.mydallasmusic.com/interviews.php?page=allamericanrejects100312

Partial transcript below the cut.

When The All-American Rejects came through Dallas on their tour with Boys Like Girls and The Ready Set, Mike Kennerty (guitar, 32 years old) and Chris Gaylor (drums, 33 years old) sat down with me in the House of Blues’ Foundation Room for an interview about everything from their evolution as a band to how social media has changed the music industry.

The All-American Rejects also gave My Dallas Music the opportunity to reveal a new version of “Heartbeat Slowing Down”. While this is neither single nor an actual remix, this little “hint” from the band takes the song in question to a pleasantly surprising place.

While the album version of “Heartbeat Slowing Down” was reminiscent of the 90s ballads I grew up loving and listening to, the band added some serious punch to the flatline mix that turns the song into something you can both dance to and identify with emotionally. Many of the more danceable/upbeat songs out today lack the all-important emotional pull that makes music truly memorable and resonant, but The All-American Rejects achieved the perfect combination of sentimentality and dancability with this new twist on a not-so old favorite.

Below is a sneak peek of the interview. Click on the embedded content above to hear the interview and the song in their entirety.

Kristen Reed: I’ve listened to your music for about ten years now, and I’ve noticed that you have evolved as musicians without losing your authenticity or straying from a good sound. How have you managed to do that over the years?

Mike Kennerty: I think it’s just following ourselves as we’ve grown. I think a lot of bands paint themselves into a corner and feel like they have to play a certain genre or a certain style, and we’ve always kind of done whatever we feel like. We’ve also taken a lot of time between albums, which I think allows us time to grow as musicians and find ourselves in a different place when it comes time to make a new record. We let the songs dictate where the songs are going to go and don’t try to force them into a style.

Kristen: So you just mentioned something about how you take a while between records. Do you feel like bands are putting out records too quickly these days?

Mike: I think they are bands that fall into that… like they feel the need to capitalize on some success that they have at that moment, so [they try to] shove out a record as quick as they can and hopefully ride that tail.

Chris: It usually affects the quality and the kind of sound, and they just make the same record over and over. [They’ll follow what they did before like] “Well it worked the first time so let’s do it the same way this time”.

Mike: Yeah, we’ve always felt that a good song will rise above, so we’ve taken our time and knock on wood it’s worked so far for us.

Kristen: How important do you think image is when it comes to being successful in the music industry?

Mike: Well, if you look at us, not very.

Chris: Yeah, we’re four different dudes, I would say. We definitely don’t have a spearheaded image.

Mike: Yeah, it’s funny. It’s kind of our crutch in that you ask pretty much anybody and they’ll know our songs, but a lot of people can’t tell you who sings them or they don’t realize that all of those songs are us. We’ve seen it happen with a lot of bands around us that have a very pointed image and the kids really latch onto it and you see their audience looks like them, and it works really well, but then I think how long can that last? It’s always sort of a fad. The kid will eventually grow out of it and want to dress differently. I don’t know… It’s very effective and important and it definitely helps things. I think we’re sort of proof that you can not have that and it still works, but that’s all we’ve really cared about is the songs. We’re not cool.

Chris: We started playing a lot of music because we weren’t cool, so we weren’t hanging out at, you know, the keg parties and stuff like that. We’d rather be playing music on the weekends.

Hallooooo, my crazy little AAR-caps pals! I have been sucked into a round of work and Pottermore (evil site - THIRTY FIVE MINUTES UNTIL MY POTION IS BREWED, I need a hobby), but AAR is never far from my mind, because I'm a creeper that way. And as a <s>creeper</s> fan, it behooves me to search out EVERY VIDEO AND ARTICLE EVER.

And now I bring them to you.

Because I'm an enabler like that. :D

<lj-embed id="125" />

This one, to start you off nice and slow (like a GATEWAY DRUG, amwahah), is the Track-by-Track start-off (I assume?) for 'Kids in the Street', otherwise known as "that one where Chris talks and Nick calls Tyson 'Ty' and my heart 'sploded".

<lj-embed id="126" />

Tyson singing something to a deeply unimpressed crew. Well, alright then. (also, be warned, scariest Goblin cackle ever. :S)

(This one isn't working in preview, so here is the direct link to the scary awesome.)

<lj-embed id="127" />

In which Tyson is utterly gracious and doesn't rub it in at all that Nick has turned thirty. Nu-uh. Not one bit.

<lj-embed id="128" />

In which Tyson proves that sanity is for the weak, and him and Chris make out.

<s>Nearly.</s>

<lj-embed id="129" />

In which Tyson freaks out the citizens of Toronto. Everyone has to have a hobby of some kind, I suppose.

TWENTY-ONE MINUTES UNTIL POTION-READINESS, PEOPLE.

<lj-embed id="130" />

In which Tyson proves there ain't no mountain high enough (or something like that), and, more worryingly, that he has accomplices in his insanity.

ARTICLES

At some point, someone in their label clearly realised that Mike is a) the sweetest member of this band and b) the most coherent, so he's been wheeled out to do a fair few interviews by himself. As the only member of the band who isn't certifiably crazy (Tyson), liable to make interviewers cry (Nick) or liable to sit there in determined, freezing silence (Chris), Mike is an excellent choice for interviews, as these two show.

Or: EEEEEEEEE MIKE.

Interview with Shauna O'Donnell. No, I don't know who she is either, but the interview is sweet.

The Music-Moxie Interview the All-American Rejects

This interview is with Mike (eeeee!!) but comes with the prettiest picture of all the members I have seen in a loooong while. In fact, I share it here for your delectation and delight:

(Warning: It's a screen-eater. AND A HEART-EATER.)

YOU SEE.

ANYWAY, here is an article with just Nick and the interviewer seems to escape with her self-esteem intact! It's marvellous.

A Talk with Nick Wheeler of the All-American Rejects

It is also adorable, and Nick talks about basically saving Tyson from himself, all the while calling him Ty, so my heart is now a little puddle of melted goo. :D

All of that being said, there is a definite Tyson slant here, so SHARE, PEOPLE, SHARE. Videos, articles, etc... :D

Also, I have to ask: WHERE IS THE FIC!?
