The Way of Integrity: Finding the Path to Your True Self
AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
“A roadmap on the journey to truth and authenticity… [The Way of Integrity] is filled with aha moments and practical exercises that can guide us as we seek enlightenment.” –Oprah Winfrey
Bestselling author, life coach, and sociologist Martha Beck explains why “integrity”—needed now more than ever in these tumultuous times—is the key to a meaningful and joyful life
AN OPEN FIELD PUBLICATION FROM MARIA SHRIVER
As Martha Beck says in her book, “Integrity is the cure for psychological suffering. Period.”
In The Way of Integrity, Beck presents a four-stage process that anyone can use to find integrity, and with it, a sense of purpose, emotional healing, and a life free of mental suffering. Much of what plagues us—people pleasing, staying in stale relationships, negative habits—all point to what happens when we are out of touch with what truly makes us feel whole.
Inspired by The Divine Comedy, Beck uses Dante’s classic hero’s journey as a framework to break down the process of attaining personal integrity into small, manageable steps. She shows how to read our internal signals that lead us towards our true path, and to recognize what we actually yearn for versus what our culture sells us.
With techniques tested on hundreds of her clients, Beck brings her expertise as a social scientist, life coach and human being to help readers to uncover what integrity looks like in their own lives. She takes us on a spiritual adventure that not only will change the direction of our lives, but also bring us to a place of genuine happiness.

This book shocked me! I was surprised to love the Divine Comedy references throughout adding a unique "flavor" to the message unlike other books with a similar message (if there is one comparable to this). It is such a personal, difficult subject but her style and humor is perfect to break up the intense focus and let you enjoy the journey even more.
I had no expectations not being familiar with her work and was very impressed. Interested in her other books and courses. Need more Martha Beck in my life (and in the world).
I was blown away by the exercises in each chapter. They drew from so many other concepts and experts (e.g. Karpman Drama Triangle, Byron Katie) that I want to dig deeper into.
The writing style is very sophisticated from a very intelligent author but it is still accessible to a broad audience (the majority of us who don't have a PhD from Harvard) and her zany humor was cracking me up! Such a unique contrast to the eloquent passages.
It leaves the reader with a couple homework assignments. One very simple (authentic/nature) yet extremely uncomfortable and challenging (in the context of social expectations). The other even more profound and life altering which you will discover at the conclusion.
I have read many self help books and this is not a beginner's guide to mindfulness or meditation or anything like that. It is much more. And with very practical exercises. My only complaint is that a couple exercises really resonated with me and seemed to gain traction on changing negative false beliefs leaving me wanting more.

LIFE CHANGING
Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2024This is my fourth book from Martha Beck, and yet it was still life-changing. I love the way she writes: she’s lighthearted while deeply profound. She’s funny and brilliant. Plus, what she has to say is just perfect. Her life journey gives her personal experience of what she is teaching, which is priceless.
I love this book in particular because it’s so simple. I can recommend it to anyone. I used to recommend “Steering by Starlight,” but now I recommend this.
I’ve read a lot of spiritual/self-help books, but SBS was still my go to for a lot of people (or Becoming Magic and The Game of Life and How to Play It if I wanted to teach them about manifestation).
Lastly, I was thrilled to learn she reads it!!!! OMG what a treat. When I first heard her voice I assumed it was just got the beginning but it was still nice. Then she continued and I was so excited!! It’s been a while since she’s done that and I thought she was over reading her books. This was a nice surprise! Thank you!

Excellent words on finding purpose an integrity!
Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2025I like that there is no sugarcoating of the truth. No lies, just truth. Dr. Martha Beck's truth and even divine truth.
I found myself compelled to read day by day, even if for a moment. Even on days that I was experiencing difficulty.
I recommend this book to anyone who believes they have something to offer the world.
I'm thankful I came across this book and read it.

The Truth is Out There
Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2023Martha Beck titles her journey from Mormon-churchgoing-academic-iconoclast to sexagenarian-polyamorous-lesbian-nature-loving-self-help-guru The Way of Integrity.
Beck's "Way" consists of a repackaging of the Yogic principle of Satya (truthfulness), Byron Katie's "The Work," and the euphemistic sentiment best captured in Sting's 1985 classic, "If you love somebody, set them free." Welcome back to the summer of love Martha.
Beck is undoubtably a good writer and her use of Dante's The Divine Comedy to affirm pop-psychology self-help principles, while strained at times, is quite effective and fun to read.
However, this book feels dizzyingly schizophrenic. It vacillates between personal memoir, a retelling of Beck's clients stories, an academic treatise, and a self-help "workbook" that is both distracting and kitshy.
By the fourth act, where Beck dives into Dante's "Paradise," The Way of Integrity really goes off the rails. The reader is left with the impression that Beck's "Way" has lead her to dosing large quantities of Psilocybin mushrooms on her nature compound in Los Padres National Forest in California while continuing to enjoy the fruits of her new found lesbianism and sexual liberation.
However, Beck's newly found paradise comes with the blissful naiveté of someone who hasn't spent much time in nature. Beck recounts ill-informed encounters with javelinas and lions that are cringe worthy and give her the appearance of a modern day crackpot who makes Henry David Thoreau look conventional.
All said, Beck's book is a good read, but let's hope her next life approach looks more like The Way of Michael Pollan.

Buy this book, read it. Then buy multiple copies to give to people you care about.
Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2025Martha. My goodness. Thank you for this gift! This book is incredible, powerful, funny at times, practical, and transformational. I am so grateful to have read this at a time of major transformation in my life, it came right when I needed it. Something that is paying off immediately in my life is thinking throughout the day when a frustration pops up, "I allow everything in the universe to be as it is in this moment." and then "I surrender all resistance to the universe being as it is in this moment." I can't say enough good things about your book Martha. Again, thank you!!!

life changing!
Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2025This beautiful, engaging book presents a road map for attaining something so improbable and urgent—enlightenment of the self and society. With riveting and complete simplicity, it discusses and makes tangible the most important task we all face—knowing ourselves. It’s no more complex than not telling—or living—a lie. The exercises, personal confessions, and metaphorical references to a 12th century literary masterpiece lead us willingly by the hand on an impossible journey to the possible. I am utterly grateful and changed by this book.
