- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe Improvement Game by Laura Williams is a must-read for educators. This book does an amazing job at moving the needle away from doing school to students to creating learning experiences that help students learn as best as they can and really find out who they are as learners. This book looks at all aspects of learning from ensuring that learners have a high level of culture and safety to how we ensure they are able to explore and contribute. Authentic learning is something that should be desired in all learning environments and this book will help educators find a path to ensure they can make this a reality.
In my twenty years as an educator, I have seen many teachers who have great ideas but do not have the resources or structures to help put those ideas into action. Laura includes many templates and protocols to assist teachers in making the work real and to aid students as they take on authentic learning, or as she describes it, project-based learning on steroids. These ideas can impact all students and help them learn as best as they can while discovering who and what they can be in the process. The protocols in this book not only can help with authentic learning but have given me many ideas on how I can better support teachers in our own collaborative work in my role as an instructional coach. The protocols and examples have helped me gain some clarity and ideas on how we can improve our own processes as we work together to improve learning for students.
Laura does not talk just about hypotheticals but gives real examples of how authentic learning has been implemented throughout grade levels and environments. The actual examples show what can be done in a classroom and how teachers can really implement authentic learning with their students, whether in elementary school, middle school, or high school. The examples included will help you implement the big ideas discussed throughout the book along with your own big ideas that you may not have found ways to implement yet.
Laura does not just share her own ideas and experiences but brings in others who have a wide and varied background to show authentic learning can be done and the impact it can have on our learners. Hearing from engineers, actors, administrators, authors, and many educators, you can gain a wider understanding of how authentic learning can be done and the great impact it can have on students. From including many “Zach Morris Timeout Moment” reflections, templates and protocols, her own personal life experiences, and informative graphics that drive home the ideas being discussed, Laura does a great job bringing in all of the pieces needed to move forward in implementing authentic learning in your own classroom. You will be a better educator by reading this book and finding ways to implement or support authentic learning in your own schools and environments.
