Welcome to A Shared Dream, an Inception RP based in the universe created by Christopher Nolan!

A Shared Dream is a future-based (that is, it takes place after the Fischer job) roleplay community that allows both canon and original characters. The game is an open book - members are free to explore both the real and dream worlds of their characters. Along with that, challenges will occasionally be issued in the form of jobs - everyone will have a role to play! For more details about the current plots and characters, please look here.

Below the cut is an FAQ where you can learn more about the community!

What kind of original character can I make? What about characters like Mal and Fischer, whose endings aren't totally condusive to RP?

Here at a_shared_dream, we accept all sorts of original characters. Want to be a rival extractor? Want to be an architect like Ariadne? Want to be a projection that tries to screw up missions? Anything goes! Just pick a name and face claim, and come up with a bio, role and totem, and you're good to go!

As for characters like Mal, whose ending wasn't 100% concrete, it's up to those playing them to decide their fates. Want Mal to join in on dream extraction too? There are lots of possibilities and ways to use them - be creative!

How does my character interact with others?

Each character must have a personal journal and an AIM screenname, and everyone is required to add all the other characters to these accounts. Interaction can be done through LJ posts and comments, through IMs and chats, and through scenes. We encourage everyone to be active and to talk to everyone else - you never know who you'll click with!

What kind of stuff can I roleplay?

Anything you'd like! You can explore your character's reality and dreams, and can touch on both their personal and work life. Pretty much anything goes! If you plan to approach a sensitive topic, such as rape, abortion, infidelity, etc, please discuss it thoroughly with all parties involved before beginning the storyline. The last thing we want is OOC drama.

How are you going to deal with dreams in this rp?

You are free to write both reality and dreams into your storylines. Unless otherwise explicitly stated at the beginning, all conversations, posts and scenes will take place in reality. This is to avoid confusion. But so long as all participants are aware, feel free to explore both worlds as much as you'd like! When scenes are posted to a_shared_scene, they will be specified as reality or dream.

Does it matter if I've never done an rp before?
Not at all! This is a really friendly community, and the RPers all have different levels of roleplay experience. Anyone can join!

What if a character gets dropped and I want to pick him/her up? Do I have to keep the same plots and backstory?
If you've decided to pick up a dropped character, a mod will inform you once you've applied. We'll also let you know of any important backstory and relationships, and it's up to you to decide what to do with it. You're free to keep it as is, or to morph your character away from that once you begin. All we ask is that you don't 100% ignore all the backstory and relationships that were previously established by someone else - for the sake of the other players.

How active do I have to be?
We require a journal update every two weeks, and we will be doing periodical cleanouts. However, much of the community interaction takes place on AIM, through IMs, chats and scenes. We highly encourage you to sign your character on as much as possible so that everyone can interact!

Here at a_shared_dream, we accept applications for both canon and original characters. Want to be another extractor? Want to be an architect like Ariadne? Want to be a projection that tries to screw up missions? Anything goes! You can see the list of taken characters here. Please do not attempt to apply as a taken character - we will post notices when a character opens up.

You have two options: to post your application right away, or to place a hold on your desired character while you work on the application. Your hold will last 48 hours. If, after the 48 hours, you have not posted your application, your hold expires and the character is up for grabs. If the character you desire is on hold, you may put your name down and let us know that you're interested; if the hold expires, we'll give you a 48 hour hold. If the character is taken, feel free to apply for someone else or invent an original character!

Below are two applications: one for canon film characters and one for original characters. Please fill one out and post it as a comment here, using your character's journal! We highly recommend that you read the rules first (hint, hint).

It has been a little over a year after Cobb's team performed the first known successful inception on Robert Fischer. In the intervening months, when the heat on their tentative organizational base in Paris became too much, the team has scattered to the corners of the globe, re-forging old connections and making new ones with veterans and newcomers to the business alike. When Ariadne and Eames are suddenly affected by a pair of shades more virulent and terrifying than even Mal, with the help of former mark Robert Fischer and ex-FBI agent Constantine Fitzweiss, Arthur and other members of the dreamshare community begin to suss out a pattern. As the roots of the shade virus become clear and the endgame of the anarchists behind it moves forward, members of a once-cutthroat business must make a choice: band together to save the world of dreamshare, or join the terrorists intent upon tearing down the framework of government and starting anew?

In the wake of the Fischer inception, Arthur's found himself in the uncomfortable and undesired position of having gained some notoriety - not exactly a point man's biggest asset. Arthur's a man who likes to stay busy and prides himself on staying cool under pressure that would crack a lesser individual. He's never wanted to be a celebrity - he'd prefer to remain something of a quiet enigma. But no man is an island, and Arthur can't remain a mystery to everyone - particularly not those he's grown close to - forever. Nevertheless, if you want a job done well and done thoroughly, Arthur's still your go-to guy.

To everyone's relief, following the Inception, Robert dismantled his father's empire. However, the job was not entirely successful. Fischer began to be haunted by the faces of people he couldn't remember, in destructive dreams he couldn't explain, and these lead him to seek the assistance of CIA Agent Fitzweiss, in Paris. However, something more came of this partnership than either had ever expected, and while the investigation continues to flourish, so does the relationship between Robert and Constantine.

Unfortunately, happiness comes with a price, as Robert discovered after he shared a dream between the PASIV and LUCID devices. Lately, he has begun to find gaps in his memory. These are times when David, Constantine's previous, and dead, partner, takes over Robert's body. Due to the circumstances of David's death, the consciousness that was transferred into Robert through the LUCID is far more advanced than a shade, leading to much confusion and instances of a complete change in demeanor and nature, as it seems to others. Currently, the original team are working on a Counter-Inception - a way by which they intend to convince Robert that the team can be trusted - but this is one element they haven't factored in. It is uncertain as to whether David is on anybody's side, but one thing is sure - he is just as loyal to Constantine as Robert is, though it remains to be seen whether their tentative relationship, and Robert's state of mind, can handle this upheaval, or whether David is a force outside the limits of reality who can never be fully controlled.

Ariadne had grown up in France with her grandmother after her mother's death. Her father had been busy with work, with little time for taking care of a young child. She stayed in France even after her grandmother's death to attend school; she had discovered that her family had kept secrets from her "for her protection" and she couldn't accept their behavior. She has no contact with her father at this time.

Following the Fischer job, Ariadne worked hard to complete her architecture degree. She had thought she could participate in the fringes of mind crime as an architect without being a part of it. She had a stable job, a fantastic relationship and everything seemed to be going well. Recent events have proven her wrong, so now she's at a crossroads.

Eames did a bit of traveling after the Inception gig, taking up a few jobs here and there before returning to Cobb’s team at the perfectly wrong time. A somewhat petty thief with a fondness for gambling, he gets by on charm, wit, and occasionally harassing both the new Forger and the Point Men around the office. Excellent observational skills and a penchant for perfection (if only in the personalities he forges) keep him at the top of his game, and at the top of his field. But with the threat of Fischer looming on the horizon, and the interesting dynamics between himself and the new Forger on the team, keeps him from being anything but relaxed about the days to come.

Ksenia is a Russian-American pointman, 25, formerly operating out of Chicago, and before that Madrid. Her entire team, people she considered her family, were murdered in May, barely getting out alive herself. Haunted by their deaths, Ksenia struggles every day to keep it together for the people she works with. She joined up with Cobb's team shortly after, and has managed fit in quite well with them. Product of a broken home, she's not always used to sharing what's on her mind and she still holds back most of her past, even from her closest friends. She channels her anger at that past into her work, taking pride in being the best she can be. Skilled with computers, knives and rifles, Ksenia will go to great lengths to get the job done, sometimes doing the things no one else will. While she gets along well with most people and has a sense of cool confidence, inside she's very torn between doing the right thing and closing herself off, not wanting to bring emotion into an already dangerous game.

constantine fitzweiss | cant_con_a_con | cantconthiscon

Constantine is a former CIA agent, now on the run with the prototype experimental technology ‘LUCID’. He and the agency had one too many clashes of ideals, and in his opinion the technology is put to better use helping people – even people who break the law – than persecuting them. Now married to Robert Fischer, the pair of them having survived the ordeal with the echoes of David, he’s gained a stability in his life that he realizes comes with a terrible cost. His fears about the agency he formerly worked for were cemented by the sudden death of his former partner, McKendrick, and the glossing over of her murder. He won’t forget it.

You know those rock stars that will never die, no matter what they do to themselves? The kind of person that no matter what kind of horrible substances they mix together and put into themselves, they never seem die? Story of Lennox's life. He is his own first test subject, and he practically never has a clean blood stream. You name it, he's tried it and is possibly on it at this very second. Despite all of this, he is really a fantastic chemist. Though he operates more on intuition and 'what feels right' than a scientific basis, he has never permanently harmed anyone with his compounds and he has a master's touch when it comes to producing exact results with chemicals. Unfortunately, clean record or no, most teams seem unwilling to trust themselves to a chemist that's never totally sober.

Lennox doesn't let that get to him, though. He's an extremely easygoing person, and quite easy to get along with. He rarely does fieldwork anymore, however, due to the vast quantities of sedatives it takes to actually put him under at this point. He also has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of drug interactions. How will your medication react to this new compound? He's the one to ask! (He probably knows from experience.)

Not feeling like all is quite well with your dream-sharing job? Frustrated by your fading dreams? Anxious because you’re new to the field? Just need someone to talk to? Luckily, Rin Amamiya is on the scene, offering a helping hand. This long-time dream-diver has taken up the position of counselor to act as a supporter, a listening ear, a source of advice, and a dream analyst. Additionally, she provides assistance in training newcomers and role unspecific dream-sharing backup. She’s far from having retired from fieldwork, though, as Rin still works jobs on a for-hire basis, usually as a Point Man or Forger (she’s a bit of a Jack of all trades). Rin also holds a day job as a university career counselor and business advisor. So who knows? Maybe she’s closer than you think. Rin is also the niece of one powerful Japanese business man, Saito.

As a child of mixed Spanish and Japanese heritage, Kaname always had trouble trying to fit in, wherever he went. He constantly changed his appearance, trying to figure out what worked for him and the environments he found himself in. Interestingly enough, it was becoming a Forger and being able to have that freedom of looking like whomever he wanted that helped him come to terms with his own appearance. As an added bonus, he found that he was good at his job, too. He became known as quite a forger until suddenly, he dropped off the radar completely and without any warning. After remaining missing for a year, he’s suddenly made a reappearance in the business, but it looks like things have changed. He’s lost most of his vision in one eye and has seemed to have changed his role in the dream-sharing world. In fact, he seems to have developed an aversion for dream-sharing, leading him to become an informant and intermediary for those who work in the business and those who would like to employ the services of such people. And, oddly enough, he also studies criminal justice and occasionally serves as a detective informant (for cases not of the mind-crime variety) when he isn’t occupied as an intermediary. Overall, Kaname is slowly becoming a master at networking, gathering intel, and burying information and tracks when necessary.

Anya is an ex-CIA agent who specialized in interrogations and undercover work as an agent. She worked in the CIA's shared dreaming program but quit for reasons she has never shared with anyone. Now she freelances, mostly working for various government agencies, but she's considering moving to corporate espionage.

Adrian got into the business early, when it was still a fledgling sort of science that wasn't really spoken of in any tone louder than a whisper. He's a natural forger with years of experience and an uncanny knack of become the role. In fact... he's too good at it. Back when it was all new they didn't know much about the dangers of dipping into dreams, there was no thought of totems or tethers to the real world; there was only the thrill and rush of this new experience. Adrian's forged so well, so often, for so long, that he's almost completely lost track of who he's supposed to be. In short, he's become somewhat of a nutter... who just so happens to be completely fixated on Arthur.

Bianca's an extractor and an assassin. Raised half in L.A. and half in Venice by an arms dealer father who counted several top Mafiosi among his clients, Bianca was a part of the criminal underground since she was old enough to talk. She's always up for a job, but won't hesitate to turn around and stick a knife between your ribs or fire a bullet into your brain. However, she keeps this side well hidden until it doesn't need to be.

Sarah is a beginning Ph.D. student for psychology at Oxford University, a supporter of the dream community, and is Eames's younger sister. She wants in to the dream community, be it through a smaller supportive role, or finding a possible niche in extraction work, should the opportunity arise. Right now, Sarah is dedicating herself to trying to help Eames keep his grip on reality, and help try and sort out the problem with Shades as she learns the ropes of the community around her.

Victor (codename: Impetus) is an Italian American, born in Manhattan, NY. His father made a name for himself through leaving the family with a large amount of debt and disappearing off to who knows where when Victor was very young. Despite growing up in a poorer environment, he worked hard during highschool and secured a scholarship to college. If anything, his disadvantage seems to have made him more determined.

Twenty years later, and a crafted nondescript past behind him, Malone has surfaced once more as a thirty nine year-old idealist with connections to the sleazier side of dreamshare. He's seen the power in its potential - or at least, someone has. There may well be an entire team behind him, or around him, but Victor seems to be heading this one alone. He's good at adapting - you've got to adapt for a cause, right? and this world needs cleaning. Bad. If no one else has the guts or the gall to do it, he will. They'll thank him later.

‘Tenebrae’, as he’s known, is impossible to find a history for. He is rarely found without Impetus, and seems to have a mercurial personality. It isn’t that he’s bad-tempered, just unpredictable. He isn’t unintelligent and genuinely believes in the cause he intends to sacrifice himself for: anarchy. His goals are to tear down the current bounds of society, and let humanity rebuild itself – something he sees as desperately needed. He values strength above most other things, and has extensive martial arts training, specializing in a particular branch of kung fu. He has his own ideals and his own definition of moral values, and is loyal in his own way to those who he finds worthy. Anyone else is either in the way, or not. (If you are wise, you won’t be in the way.)

First of all I want to say thank you guys for being so wonderful & making my time here so enjoyable.

It has come to my realization that I've been letting you guys down as a Mod. Due in part to my attitude & my past experience with games over a year in age, I have had feelings that it was time to let this one begin to play itself out. However, I also realize that I did not build this community but instead inherited it, and that's not entirely my decision to make. What it is today and has been in the past is all you guys and your efforts.

On that note, effective immediately, I am resigning from my position as Mod, in favor of the community moving in a direction mutually decided on by its members.

What does this mean? I will put forth a few options:

1. We all shake hands & agree "good run". I know as a group we're all friends. Ending the game here, on a relatively positive note, we can move forward into new games & explore new characters.

2. As a group, you agree on a new moderator or moderators. I will transfer ownership of the communities over & agree to finish the current plot with my characters (whom I know withdrawing right now would leave a lot of people in the lurch if they wanted to continue) before I resign entirely.

3. We declare the Comm 'closed', but we all finish the current plot before moving on.

This is by no means a definitive list of options. However, irregardless of the decision reached by the community, this plot will be the last one for me.

What I won't be doing is shutting down or deleting any of the communities. They will all remain as archives & open to posting by members. If you guys want to continue to share scenes occasionally, or need to access old scenes for nostalgia, they will always be there for you. The comm will serve as an archive.

I will also keep 'cantconthiscon' as my primary screen name on AIM, so if you need to get in touch with me for any reason, I will be there and available like I usually am.

Thank you guys for such a good place to be. I have deeply enjoyed my time here working with you, but my policy always has been that when I start to be angry or frustrated, or stop having fun in something that I do for fun, it's time to move on.

Hello everyone! Modpost time!

Guess what - a_shared_dream's one-month anniversary is coming up! It's this Sunday. :D I'm stoked with how many members we have - when Jess and I started this place up, we were convinced that it'd just be us and our few friends that we forced to join, flailing about. Look how much we've grown!

Since we've grown, and have lots of people playing, I think it's looking like time we drop a few kind ~modly notes~. Let's not call them rules, that sounds harsh. Modly notes are much better.

Please, everyone, take a minute to give this a read.

[One.] When you contact someone on AIM, it's often hard to tell if you're IMing them in character or out of character. Since our screennames are technically supposed to be screennames for our characters, sometimes it gets confusing when someone IMs you with "Hey!". Do you respond as yourself, or your character? When IMing someone, please do something to signify whether it's IC or OOC. The general rule of thumb is brackets - if you're IMing someone OOC, put some variation of (( )) around your message. That way, if Arthur sent Ariadne ((Hey, how's it going?)), I'd know this was Jess talking to me. But if he sent her Hey, how's it going?, I'd know this was Arthur talking to Ariadne. Capishe?

[Two.] Please try not to make decisions for other peoples' characters. It hasn't happened a lot, but we've noticed it cropping up maybe once or twice, so we wanted to nip it in the bud. Pretty much, don't decide another player's backstory for them. Don't decide that Arthur and Eames went to prep school together when they were sixteen unless you've discussed it with the other person first. Likewise, I won't decide that Ariadne had a lesbian affair with Ksenia in a bar two years ago - not unless Ksenia's player and I have discussed this beforehand. It results in contradicting canon and could make people uncomfortable.

[Three.] You are more than welcome to introduce a second character into the game, if you feel you have the time and desire to take another one on! But here's our rule: each player may play a maximum of two characters; you must have been active with your first character for two weeks before applying for the second. That way we know that you've been active, and you know the best way for your new character to fit into the game.

[Four.] If you're planning to play a character that's going to be a rival for Cobb's team, please plan your timing wisely. Wait until there aren't forces coming at them from all sides before you start your storyline. If there are too many people out to get Cobb and his team, then they're screwed. It's no fun for the people playing Cobb's team if they get caught and sent to jail or something.

[Five.] This is sort of along the same guidelines as #4 - if you're going to introduce a new character, try not to place them on Cobb's team. Cobb's team is already bursting with members - it's hard to find a place for any more. Try and get creative! Start up your own team or create someone who's a for-hire character. We're just really trying to make sure that we keep a balance here, which gets more difficult as more characters join the game.

[Six.] Invite your friends! For real. If you have online or real-life friends who enjoy Inception, by all means, encourage them to join. We get excited every time a new character applies! Just please do let them know where their character might fit in - ie, explain to them about numbers 4 and 5.

Okay, I think that's everything. I know I get super-wordy, guys, so I'm sorry. We're just trying to make sure that everyone stays on the same page and that things stay balanced, so that everyone can have fun!
