FAQ Updated: why 7Pass says my database signature is invalid

If you have a database that works on your PC but not on 7Pass, and 7Pass tells you “Invalid file signature detected”:

It’s possible that your server is using a HTML page to redirect your browser to the real download URL.

This is the common behaviour of file sharing sites, or the site requires that the user has to be logged in. This works fine on your PC, but 7Pass cannot handle javascript and cookies, so it cannot download your file if the server needs these information.

In the next version of 7Pass, it will have DropBox integration to allow you to download your database using a secure encryption so that the file is always protected, without the issue described in this post.

Ideas for trial expire notification needed

7Pass is available on MartketPlace for a small fee of $0.99 and is also available as a trial.

In version 1.3, 7Pass will start to show notification screen after 50 usages when user view any entry:

When user updates his database, the count started again at 1.

Clearly, this notification is annoying. I wanted to let user know that he can buy the app to support the author, not for the author’s income. I work fulltime as a desktop developer and extremely happy with my job. I develop 7Pass for my love for KeePass, not for financial reason.

I’d want 7Pass to have a better way to tell the user that he can support me, but in a way that doesn’t prevent him from using 7Pass, something very gentle. I have some ideas in mind:

  • Something like the notification when you receive an SMS, which can be clicked on to allow user to buy 7Pass.
  • Keep the notification, but then resets the count to 1 again, repeating the cycle.
  • A small link at the bottom of the Entry page to allow user to buy 7Pass.

After DropBox support, I’ll add support for multiple database, so the idea of counting based on database/application usage will have to be considered.

Please give me advise how to do this.

7Pass 1.3 available globally

7Pass 1.3 is now available globally for all MarketPlace here. As usual, you can always get the source code of 7Pass on GitHub.

Improvements for this version:

  • Added history of recently viewed entries.
  • Update your DB resets usage count to 1.
  • Added incorrect password prompt.
  • Added support for group/entry icons.
  • Improved notes displaying in entry page.

In next version 1.4, targeted to be available 13th January, 2010, DropBox support will be the major improvement. Once you log in, 7Pass will remember your account information and allow very simple updating of the database. This feature will also provide better protection of the database file as it will always be transferred encrypted (communication with DropBox via SSL connection).

Another major change to 7Pass will be the support for multiple database (suggestion from Sebastian Pfohl here). 7Pass will then have a better navigation flow. Unfortunately, I’m now sure if I can fit this change to version 1.4. Even so, it will definitely be the next feature of 7Pass after DropBox support.

Thank you all for your support.

7Pass MarketPlace performance

I’ve been using KeePass on all my computers (work, home, laptops, netbook), synchronized using DropBox. I wanted to use my KeePass database on my Windows Phone 7 device as well, since it’s the one that is always with me.

Thanks to the open source nature of KeePass, reading the database was not much of a hassle, especially when I wanted this application to be a reader only. When I need to edit the database, I’d prefer to use a computer, where I’ll perform any password change, sign up, etc… and make changes to the database. Considering copy & paste is not available on the phone, I don’t see any reason to edit the password on the phone.

7Pass then has its first version submitted to MarketPlace on 12 December, 2010.

As of today, 28 December, the MarketPlace has updated data for until 22 December. I’d like to share with all 7Pass’ performance so far.

73 Downloads

And the break-down of downloads per market:

It’s quite interesting to see that Germans seems most concern about security.

Version 1.2 submitted to MarketPlace

Version 1.2 of 7Pass has been submitted to MarketPlace on 24 December, 2010. Normally, the testing will takes 3 working days and then the new version will be published to all markets automatically.

I still have some additional changes not included in this version:

  • Handling of incorrect password.
Thanks to feedback from DL White Denver.
  • Added signature comparison on file download complete.
