Tutorial 1 [Gokudera Hayato]

Translatable: Completely to other PS programs! Possibly other programs, as well. ♥
Difficulty: Eh... I'd say about medium to hard. It's manga coloring, so there is some amount of knowledge required.
Includes: Manga coloring, LOTS OF LAYERS, Hue/Sat Layers, Image Heavy, Before & After Examples above each step
Program: Photoshop Elements 5

The steps in this tutorial are the method I follow. You DO NOT have to follow them exactly. Feel free to experiment!!

1. First~ We prep our base! I usually duplicate it once and sharpen the duplicate layer, setting it at 40% opacity so it doesn't look too grainy, but you can make out the lines clearly. I merge the two layers and duplicate AGAIN and set the duplicate to multiply @ 40% before merging them again. Of course, this depends on the image, so if you choose to skip this step, go right ahead!

But the multiply should make the lines darker and give his hair a little more color.

2. Make a new layer [shift+ctrl+N] above your base layer and set it to Linear Burn @ 100%. Feel free to label this layer as "Skin" if you want to keep track. I usually don't do this because I just keep track through the layer pallet.

ANYWAY. Take a soft brush set at Linear Burn mode and start filling in the skin areas. As for skin colors, my universal skin color for Gokudera is #fbd8b7. Erase anything you don't want, such as any color outside the lines/in hair/eyes/etc.

3. We're not done with this layer yet! Poor Gokudera's color looks a lil bit flat all by itself! Take the brush and color from before and make the brush small-- I usually use 3-6 px for this step --and set the BRUSH opacity to 35%.

Trace the inside of the lines on his face, making sure to get his nose, eyelids, eyebrows, neck, the bit of hair in his face, chin, and lips. I like to go over the bottom lip twice to make it look darker than the other bits in the next step.

4. If you look at the example, the result of the last step looks very smudgy and distracting! This is DEFINITELY not what we want for poor Gokudera! So, we take the Blur Tool [It looks like a lil rain drop and can be found under the Sharpen Tool] with a soft brush [that I set at 23 px] at 100% Strength and go over all the darkened skin parts. This should mix the light and dark colors, making them look a little less smudgy!

Some of the color might bleed into the erased bits, so just go back and erase them again~

We are done with the skin layer! GOOD JOB! /o/ \o\ \o/

Done celebrating? OKAY. BACK TO BUSINESS.

5. Make a new layer over the skin layer and label it "Hair and Eyes", if you must~ Set it to Linear Burn @ 100% like the last time.

Make sure you set your brush opacity back to 100% and take your hair color. For Gokudera, I use a blue-gray-looking color #d0c9c2. Go over the parts of his hair and you'll see that it darkens it more and leaves the highlights just a little dark. Clean up any parts that bleed in and you're done with his hair.

ALTERNATIVELY-- If your character doesn't have a gray hair color like this, you can do the same thing as you did with the skin in the first few steps.

6. On that same layer-- or a different one with the same settings, if you so choose --take your eye color [I use #a8bd9b for his lovely dull green eyes] and fill in the eyes.

And you're done with the Hair/Eye Layer!! /o/ \o\ \o/

Isn't he starting to look just lovely~? ♥

7. Make a new layer with the same settings again and label it "Shirt" or whatever you want. Since Hayato-kun looks rather nice in red, I use #902a2a for this step, but you can use whatever strikes your fancy.

Done with this layer! CAN I GET A MANLY CHESTBUMP!? /o/ \o\ \o/

8. Time for the background! Make a new Linear Burn layer and set it on top.

This was the most challenging part of the whole damn icon because colors escape me. But a dusty gray looks great with his hair, eyes, and the shirt. So, I took #d8d7c3 and used the Paint Bucket to paint the whole layer.

But now he looks ugly! Take a large, solid eraser and erase any of the background covering up the subject. Make sure you get his hair! The background color will make the gray in his hair look an ugly yellow D:

9. This step is for the little bursts in the background. To make these, go to your Eraser @ 35% Opacity and set the actual brush to Fuzzball which should be found in the default brushes, and click once on the background in any place you want. I do it twice in this icon.

10. Okay, guys! It's been fun, but it's time for the final step! Go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue/Saturation and bump the Master Saturation up to 15. This should make the colors pop A LOT, so if you don't like it at 15, put it at whatever you want!

And that's all she wrote! I would love to see some results from other people, and, remember you don't have to follow the steps exactly! Experimentation, textures, and the like are great!
