Tutorial #5 - as requested
Aerith Icon - Photo Filter

In 4 east steps. *Photo Filter *Color Layers * Layer Modes

Today we're going to make this lovely icon of Aerith. It's not your usual icon, since the original base was blue-ish. This tutorial is for screencaps with unusual colorings of the screencaps. Caps of GoF might work. And I'm told that this only works for later versions of Photoshop, but not entirely sure. Sorry. ^-^

1. We start off by aquiring a base. Get your screencap or whatever you're using and crop it to a square. Then re-size it to 100x100. This is my base:

2. Okay, duplicate your base twice. Set the bottom duplicate to Soft Light 100%. Set the top duplicate to Screen. Adjust the opacity of the Screen layer to suit your image so that it's not too bright nor too dark. I set mine to 47%. Sharpen the Screened layer and Fade Sharpen as needed.

I achieved this after completing this step:

3. This next step is a crucial part to making the icon. It's certainly easy and it all depends on the original image.
The Photo Filter Adjustment Layer is misused and well missed Adjustment Layer. It's located here:

To continue on the icon making, click on Photo Filter on the Adjustment Layer menu. The image below shows the Photo Filter window.

For this particular icon, I'm going to use Warming Filter (85) at 65% Density. It takes out the blue and replaces it with creamy peach color. I chose the Warming Filter because I wanted to counter balance the blue. For example, you have an orange-ish screencap, use one of the Cooling Filters available in the Filter options drop down menu.

I had options to use either the Warming Filter mentioned above, Orange Filter or the Sepia Filter. I chose the Warming Filter because it stronger than both the Orange and Sepia Filter.

Also try out different degrees of Density, it's somewhat like Opacity; the higher the degree the more intense the filter. I chose 65%, not too strong but you can still notice the peach color.

Finally, click Okay after choosing which Filter and Density you would like to use. Set the Adjustment Layer to Normal.

After using the Photo Filter:

4. One final layer. Create a new layer and fill it with #c1c1c1, a light-medium grey. Set it to Color Burn 100%. This intensifies the colors. And voila! The lovely Aerith icon!

Variations of this technique: using a bluish base of GoF.

Tutorial#4 - Ron and Hermione

Learn how to go from this: to this: in 5 easy steps and 4 layers.

This tutorial is more of a color suggestion guide. Feel free to recreate similar coloring effects with this guide.

1. Pull out a screencap of your desired fandom/non-fandom and proceed to do your before icon preparation. Don't sharpen just yet.

* I cropped and resized to 100x100.

My Base:

2. Create 2 duplicates of your background layer and make the top most duplicate invisible by clicking the eye icon beside it. Sharpen the first duplicate and Fade Sharpen as needed.

* I fade sharpened mine to 75%. As an extra, I smoothed the background behind Ron and Hermione and smoothed some pixel-y areas.

3. Open up the Brightness/Contrast Window. Add 30 to Brightness and Add 50 to Contrast. Close that window and open up the Hue/Saturation Window. And add 60 to the Saturation. Don't worry about it being saturated for now. And finally, set the layer to Screen.

After this layer:

4. Now, click on the eye icon beside the top most layer to make it visible once more. Completely desaturate it. Open up Brightness/Contrast and add 30 to Brightness again. Set the layer to Soft Light.

After this layer I achieved:

5. Now, create a layer between the softlight and screen layer and fill the layer with #0c2489, a shade of blue. Set the layer to Difference 24% or whatever you desire but somewhere along those lines.

Blue-ish Green Coloring, Vibrant Coloring

Hey everybody! Tutorial #3 today! Everybody liked the coloring of a particular icon so much, I wrote a tutorial! Whoop!
Today we'll be going from:  to: . Under the cut!

I. Step One

Okay, we start with this base image of Dumbledore and the Minister I got off Teh_Indy's GoF Gallery. I suggest you check it out, the prime resource of GoF screencaps, aside from dj43's of course, unless you have dial-up. Anyway, the image was blurry so I cropped, resized to 100x100 and sharpened once. I suggest you do the same with your image and Edit>Fade Sharpen as needed. Also, you might want to use Image>Adjustments>Auto Levels and Auto Color. I faded my Auto Color to 55% because I wanted to keep some of the blue-ness of the image. Then, I duplicated the background image and set it to Screen 100%. This coloring procedure will take a lot of Screen layer but we'll leave it like that for now. I used 2 screen layers (one 100% and the other one 50%) for mine, but that's just me.

II. Step Two

Next, I added two gradients made by 77words. Instead of looking for these specific gradients, simply download her Zip file containing ALL her gradients, or simply copy and paste these:

Add this first: and set it to Color Burn 42%. Add this next: and set it to Linear Burn 100%.

III. Step Three

Next, I added a gradient again made by 77words. Again either download her Zip File or simply copy and paste the one below. I also added an Exclusion layer with the color #141a58.
Add this first:  and set it toScreen 55%. Add this next:  and set it to Exclusion 80%.

III. Step Four

Next, I added 2 fill color layer. One is #90daef in Hard Light 31% and the other is #efe190 on Darken 100%. Or you can be lazy and copy and paste these:
Add this first:  and set it to Hard Light 31%. Add this next:  and set it to Darken 100%.

III. Step Five

Now, duplicate your base image and bring it to the top of the layers. Set it ot either Soft Light 100%, Hard Light 100%, Overlay 100%. This depends on your personal image. I set mine to Hard Light 100%. IF THE FINAL PRODUCT SEEMS TO DARK, GO BACK TO YOUR BASE IMAGE, DUPLICATE IT AND SET THE DUPLICATE TO SCREEN, Do this as it is needed.
