Some places we've been and some places we're going.

Day 48 Karumba

Another lazy day but better than the lazy day being had by our neighbours. They’ve had trouble with their fridge only working on 240v so it doesn’t stay cool when they’re driving. The repairman has been in his mobile workshop to check it all out and it will cost $2000 to fix. Banking here is done through the Post Office and they’ve had an issue with the ANZ which just happens to be the bank our neighbours use. Their problems are compounding.

When we were here last year the Spilt Milk Caravan was very busy every morning but I think we were the only customers today. There are a lot of workers from Raptis Seafoods staying in units here and I’m sure they’d appreciate a nice morning coffee etc. Maybe it’s because someone different is staffing it at the moment and drinks are not as good as they were.

Fergus got a double whammy today, wormed and washed, then went to lie under the Camper, guess he thought we wouldn’t bother him there. The Dog Wash was an absolute bargain, $2 no matter how long it took, I think it must be cheaper to leave it rather than get someone in to fix it. After the Dog Wash we went to the Sunset Tavern at Karumba Point for a nice cool drink. It was quiet there and we’re wondering if southerners have already started their journey back home. People coming from the eastern side of the Ranges have all complained about how miserable and wet the weather is there so it seems we made the right decision coming here when we did.

There was a lovely big Monitor Lizard in our campground today but it wasn’t keen on people so didn’t stay long.

Our campsite is beside a quite big area of natural vegetation, that’s where the Monitor went but it’s also where the Wallabies come from at night. One ventured near our campsite today and she had a Joey in her pouch though it is difficult to see in a photo.

After a delicious salad with Threadfin Salmon we walked along to The Animal Bar and saw the sunset from the Boat Ramp.

We’ve had a quiet day so not much to write about at all.

There are some fun sculptures in this Caravan Park.

Karumba doesn’t have a Hairdressing Salon and I needed a haircut, I did think of letting Alex give me a No.5 nearly-bald cut but thought he might take out chunks so decided against that. Fergus can deal with any “mistakes” without protest but I don’t have his confidence. When we checked in here I asked the receptionist if there was anyone in town and she gave me someone’s card. She said they had a room set up at home with a single chair and there was also another person coming back to the campground and arriving today. I was keen to get my hair cut asap so phoned the number on the card but the call went straight to the message bank of an electrician.

For lunch we went to Ash’s on Karumba Point, it was very, very busy and all the outside tables were taken by people with dogs so we took our food as takeaway. Alex had a Barra Burger and I had a bag of prawns but I couldn’t manage peeling them without making a big mess so saved most of them to go with a delicious salad tonight.

I did manage to get my haircut sitting under a caravan annexe and having a nice chat about travelling and the impact of the weather. We’d both been in the same areas but about a week apart, I haven’t actually scrutinized my haircut but I know I’ve lost the “Boris Johnson” look, we need to wear hats all the time anyway.

There are heaps of things to do here and we’re not doing any of them!

We drove 30 kms back towards Normanton hoping to see the Jabirus we saw yesterday but had no luck, plenty of Brolgas but we can see those up close in the Caravan Park. Back at camp I roamed about with my old camera which gives people the impression I know what I’m doing….I wish!

Why is Alex sitting perched on the ledge below the bed? Someone has stolen his chair….and towel!

Despite it being a “do nothing day” I still clocked up 12,417 steps.

Before we leave Croydon I think I need to correct what I said yesterday about it not having much to see. Last year when we were in Croydon we had a very interesting time in the Historical Precinct and I remember enjoying listening to audio of a dramatized court case in the old Court House. Unlike the old Butcher’s Shop which is signposted but surrounded by junk, the buildings in the precinct are all perfectly maintained and well worth visiting. I’m sure people taking a Gulflander or Savannahlander train journey would find plenty to keep them occupied.

Because our supplies are running low and I have no more GF Muesli bars to serve as breakfast we went to the local shop/cafe to get something to eat. It was busy with workers in their hi-vis gear, a couple of men who were transporting a helicopter and some roo shooters. Their dogs were not happy with Fergus sitting outside the cafe when they were shut up in their crate.

Our trip through Georgetown and Normanton was uneventful but along the road we saw plenty of wildlife, Jabirus, Brolgas, eagles and other raptors and really, really cute little Wallabies. I didn’t get photos of any of them!

Here at the Gulf Country Park in Karumba though, there are plenty of birds. Last year when we were here there were thousands of Corellas in the trees but electronic bird scarers have now been installed and there are no Corellas at all. I hope that the bird scarers have motion sensors because the loud, bird noises they make will be more irritating than the Corellas which actually flew off at dusk.

The Receptionist is rearing an orphan Wallaby joey so I was able to see one up close after all.

We are booked in here for three nights but might stay longer.
