Frances Jones Bonner, Dr. Jones’ daughter, led a protest and boycott of the downtown Greensboro movie theaters because of the depictions of black women in film.
The Thomas F. Holgate Library is constructed, providing a modern resource center for Bennett women.
1948 – Jessie M. Reynolds Residence Hall is built
David D. Jones Student Union is built.
David Dallas Jones retires; Dr. Willa B. Player takes up the mantel and becomes the first female president of Bennett College.

Sit-Ins begin at Woolworth
Operation Doorknock launches this April as a part of the 34th annual homemaking institute. Thurgood Marshall and Dr. Benjamin Mays spoke at the start of the event and helped launch it.
*Operation Doorknock was an initiative led by students and faculty alike, where Belles would go around Greensboro’s black community and encourage people to vote. They made it possible to register to vote at Bennett and organized car/bus rides to the voting polls for the community to use.
Dr. Player resigns to become the Director of College Support in the U.S Office of Education of H.E.W. Dr. Isaac Miller becomes Bennett College’s 11th President.
