Two tracks – given away for free by DFA Records – for a lazy Joe Goddard sunday! First is Joe Goddard’s “All I Know” taken from his last release “Gabriel EP” (Greco-Roman). Second is London-based duo The 2 Bears (consisting of Joe Goddard and Ralf Rundell) with “Work” taken from the duo’s freshly released debut album “Be Strong” (Southern Fried Records).

kitsch genius

Halifax, Canada based Ryan Hemsworth first caught our attention about two years back when we found his blog A half-warmed Fish.
Starting to dig deeper into his blog we got to know and appreciate Ryans great taste in music and his sense for new directions as Kanye going Autotune, Lil B being based and The Weeknd making dark bass and echo heavy ballads.
Besides blogging about it, Ryan also makes music for a while now. All of his stuff has been free so far, so go on a hunt on his older blog above or his last August started Dead in the Streets tumblr. After a few EP’s under the radar Ryan recently released his Kitsch Genius EP and got some well deserved props from Discobelle and trendsetter Brodinski.
Download and listen to Kitsch Genius above and make to to cop his recent great Grimes remix from that soundcloud player below.

new build love eulberg

Freshly founded London-based band New Build reveal the first 4 tracks of their forthcoming debut – “Yesterday Was Lived & Lose”, which is to be released 3 March 2012 on the band’s own imprint LANARK RECORDINGS. The band is composed of Al Doyle (Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem) Felix Martin (Hot Chip) and Tom Hopkins and moves between classic House and fiddled Indie-Tunes. Check their first single called “Do You Not Feel Loved?”, but even make sure not to forget about the remix by german-based Producer Dominik Eulberg.

old hat

As we did not pay much attention to the release of DJ Shadow’s current album “The Less You Know, The Better”, it’s really time to mention at least one of the record’s track particularly. The track’s called “Warning Call”, features vocals by Tom Vek and reminds of some productions by Kid Alex.

the classical

The Classical

Click on the words above and download this album.

The by then mysterious Weeknd initiated the music scene of 2011 with the upload of his first mixtape House Of Balloons and was probably the most significant since most successful example for the emancipation of artists releasing their music without any help or pressure by a label.
2011 was truly the breakthrough of self distributed free music and in 2012 this development will go even further.

The Classical is our personal start for this 2012 and it could not be better!
Juliet Gordon not only has a versatile voice but also the matching musical ideas for the different characters of her voice.
Supported by friend Maxime Robillard on production and engineering, this duo created a truly multifaced piece while maintaining their own sound.
Opened with the lady and a piano ballad Where’s the rain and fluently followed by a later on more uptempo Today’s Paper, the album starts in a
Mixtape-Style, but a classic one.
In the same manner you will find different pairs of songs on the album. Connected without a pause, transitions between songs like Sterling Silver and Man on the Stairs create a merging sphere of genres.
From Rock to Soul, from darker Pop to Wave, The Classical represents them all.

grizzly

Earlier this year Jesse Boykins III released his Way of a Wayfarer EP where he used some of Gold Panda‘s playful beats which only missed a vocal part.
Jesse filled that need in a beautiful way and was on our radar from then on.
Last week Grizzly label owner Sinden played Santa and released his collaboration High Demand with Jesse with remixes by r&b/house fusionist Brenmar and Lucky Beard who is better known as Phra from the Crookers.

echoes of silence

Two nights ago, Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd finally released Echoes Of Silence, the last chapter of his endlessly hyped mixtape triology.
After his breakthrough with the dark sounding House Of Balloons and its brighter follow up Thursday, Echoes Of Silence has a new and different sound which still manages to represent The Weeknd’s trademark bass and reverb infused R&B ballads.
A fantastic cover of the almighty Michael Jackson and the only guest produced song on the tape (the Clams Casino produced The Fall) mark the standouts.
You probably already read this a lot when you looked at all the Best Of’s of ’11 and we make no exception here: these three mixtapes are more than just mixtapes, they form a conceptual project that embodies one of the best albums of the year and is a prime example of the huge increase of FREE and self released quality music in ’11.
