Maharashtra Signs Internet Deal with Starlink
Maharashtra Signs Internet Deal with Starlink
Mumbai, Nov 5 — It has been reported that Maharashtra is the first Indian state to enter into an agreement with Elon Musk’s Starlink to provide satellite-based internet-based services to its remote and underserved regions. The deal is a big step towards the state in overcoming the digital divide and the wider Digital India project in India.
The Digital Inclusion Historic Partnership
Devendra Fadnavis, the Chief Minister, declared the alliance with Starlink Vice President Lauren Dreyer, establishing it as a giant leap towards digital inclusion. The agreement is signed under the Digital Maharashtra mission by the state to reach rural and tribal areas in the high speeds Internet, which do not have stable connections.
As a part of the Letter of Intent (LoI), Starlink will install its satellite internet technology in the districts of Gadchiroli, Nandurbar, Washim, and Dharashiv, which have always been having a problem of poor network infrastructure.
DIDRBs and Starlink Role and Indian Digital Vision
Starlink is another company that is launched by SpaceX, yet it has recently acquired the Indian GMPCS (Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite) license thus allowing the company to operate officially in India. However, Starlink will start rolling out its low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network in Maharashtra after regulatory approvals have been made.
Fadnavis highlighted that the project is part of the Digital India vision of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi who intends to make sure that every citizen has access to cheap and reliable internet connectivity.
This is not the case as connectivity is not a luxury anymore but a lifeline. With this alliance, not even the farthest village in Maharashtra would remain out of the world said Fadnavis.
Starlink’s Global Mission
As noted by Lauren Dreyer, Starlink is determined to bridge communities that could not be reached due to traditional infrastructure.
Connected to people is what we are passionate about, so we are thrilled to partner with Maharashtra to provide empowerment via connectivity, education, and innovation, she stated.
Starlink is a globally used broadband offering reliable broadband to more than 3 million users in over 70 countries using its constellation of satellites that are more than 6,000.
Investment in Economy and Education
It is expected that the deal would transform:
- Education: Facilitating on line learning in distant schools
- Healthcare: Communication of telemedicine and emergency
- Agriculture: Assisting farmers to obtain weather forecast and market information
- Business: Rescuing business cloud-based solutions in small businesses and enhancing their e-commerce capabilities
It has been forecasted by the economists that the increased access to internet may increase the GDP of Maharashtra by billions of dollars through encouraging rural entrepreneurship and digital services.
A Step toward a Networked Future
Under this pact, Maharashtra will be a trendsetter with regard to digital infrastructure that can be emulated by other states. When established, the initiative could be life changing in remote locations to offer opportunities, which were inaccessible.
As Dreyer aptly summarized, The future is of connected men--and Maharashtra had just taken a large stride towards its future.
