It’s that time of the year….beautiful colours, cozy sweaters, fall suppers and break-ins!  Few people, empty cottages and easy access is the perfect combination for the unscrupulous. Just a heads up.

We are looking forward to Indian Summer, it has been cool windy and rainy. I understand that there will not be a fall supper in Falcon this year. The West Hawk United Church will be holding a Pot Luck Lunch on Sunday Oct. 3 after church. Everyone is welcome.

The Southeast Whiteshell Firefighters held their open house Aug 7. It was a fun day for all. Emergency equipment including Pumpers,Ambulance and Fire Boat were on display. Children were invited to don miniature Turn Out Gear (fire suit and boots) and were challenged to drag a fire hose the length of the hall. the youngsters then shot water from fire extinguishers at orange pylons. Small prizes were awarded.

Fire hall executives were on hand to serve soft drinks and cook up free hot dogs(courtesy of Sobeys) for all who attended.  Over 15 dozen hot dogs were eaten!

In the afternoon onlookers saw a display of the “Jaws Of Life” where a vehicle was systematically dismembered by the volunteer Firefighters, this was  accompanied by a running commentary of how and why actions took place.

Safety and rescue kits as well as smoke detectors  were on sale.

The open house is an attempt to include the community in this worthwhile undertaking… providing safety through  volunteers.

We appreciate the time and effort our Fire Department executive and Firefighters put in year in and year out, training, organizing events and fundraisers and of course attending emergency call outs.

August has been jam packed with activities The Doug Edmond Band preformed August 7 to the delight of many. Approximately 30 boats drifted to the music  on blk 9 West Hawk. This was the third annual dock performance for the Band.

Falcon Lake held their annual Fun Fest from the 5th to the 8th of August. Wonder Shows supplied the rides, the foot long hot dogs and Mini Donuts, kids and their families supplied the squeals of laughter.  Beer gardens and live music kept the adults happy. Those in the mood for shopping found tables of jewelry,T-shirts, sunglasses, henna tattoos and more. The highlight of the weekend event was the spectacular fireworks display Saturday night.

Mary Ann and her girls will be here once again for this week’s Farmers Market. Come see us Saturday morning to see what goodies they have for us this week.

A little fun turned tragic  yesterday when three young men capsized the canoe they were in.Two of the teens were pulled from the water by nearby boaters but the third boy had slipped under the water and did not resurface. Our local firefighters and rescue boat attended along with  Conservation, RCMP and RCMP divers.  The young man was finally pulled from the water just before 7:00pm.

A wild storm hit our area Monday July 26th. Severe winds hail and a lightning show blew through the area leaving behind  hundreds of  downed trees, damaged  cottages and vehicles. Caddy Lake and Ingolf were especially hit hard. Power was out  for many for as long as 48 hrs. Tuesday morning we were kept busy serving coffee and muffins to all those without power.  Thankfully there were no injuries, but we have heard many stories of families huddled together as they listened to the howling winds that some described as sounding like a freight train. (rumor has it a funnel cloud was spotted near Caddy Lake) Some brave souls watched the show from their verandas and decks, while apparently others waited out the storm under a picnic table on the Mantario trail!

Beautiful day, 26  sunny and humid! Speaking of sunny, we now have Zinka Sun screen and sun block in the store. A blast from the past,the 80’s  Zinka is back!  Pink, blue,green yellow zinc oxide sunblock. We also have a clear lip protector, clear lotion and spray spf 30 sunscreens.
