On Planning

Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

-Mary Oliver

Who needs teeth when you get to wear one of your grandmother’s hats to school on “Hat Day”?   I think Adeline may have also picked out her wardrobe for the day. Our first grandchild fills our heart with unending joy, as do the others, but first is always extra special.

Two, Deep Breaths

Sunday Pipes #223

I apologize in advance.

This will be the second time in a few weeks that I have featured this well-known work by J S Bach.  Sunday Pipes #219

But, it will be the first time I feature it being played on an accordion!

I appreciate the sound of instrument.  My parents got one for me and I took lessons for a few years, but ended up selling it in the mid-90s. I stuck with the guitar.

What struck me initially of this video was the starkness of the room.

The Passacaglia & Fugue in Cmin, (BWV582) performed by Radu Ratoi

A beautiful performance with a captivating finish.

Ponder These Reminders

“Your death will come on an ordinary day, in the middle of unfinished plans, and the world will continue on without you. So live a little”.

unknown, via @simplymarge1974 and @in-my-minds-eye-2349.tumblr.com

“Life is short and dead is for a very long time.  Enjoy your life, but always remember death because one day, the next thing you know will be the last thing you know”.          -Me

The older I get, the more often I think about this.  Not that I am obsessed with it, but just a mature attitude towards life and death. Let’s face it, both of us are closer to our deaths than when you started reading this post.

With that, I’ll wish y’all a great day and hopefully we will all still be around tomorrow.

On Discourse

Being taught to avoid talking about politics and religion has led to a lack of understanding of politics and religion.

What we should have been taught was how to have a civil conversation about a difficult topic.

Those Were The Days, My Friend

I can picture this, shag carpet, wood paneling, and all, listening to albums, reading liner notes and memorizing the lyrics to every song.

Song In The Breeze was definitely one of those songs.

From the first album and not a weak song on it.

On Sleep

Let me count the ways.

On Blurring & Focusing

It is not often you find me sharing information that was found in the NY Times, but here we are.  If you read one article today, I suggest the link below. In the four minutes it takes to read it, you will gain much insight.

Thanks to Steve Layman for sharing this post from Rogue Highway Substack.

What happened during the 2012-2025 era was this: Boundaries became blurred. By boundaries, I mean fundamental barriers that are existential to the human condition. These are the barriers we need so we can make sense of the world, both as individuals and groups. Obey them, and we thrive. Cross them, and things fall apart. So many of these existential boundaries were blurred that I’ll call this period The Great Blurring.

Sunday Pipes #222

This is an intriguing story by @Charles-Reardon about a small organ in Virginia. It is worth the 7:46 minutes to watch/listen to Charles providing a little razzle-dazzle on this 2-register Rieger organ..

I’ve Been Thinking

I’ve been thinking, that it has been a while since I wrote a story for the blog. Quotes, links and cute photos are fine, but I’m a writer at heart. I must get back to writing.

I’ve been thinking, that it will 14 years ago tomorrow that I retired from the fire dept. after 36 years in Fire-EMS. There are very few guys I worked with still there and the new trucks/engines I once proudly drove are now retired or used as reserve apparatus. Rarely a day goes by that I don’t think about that time of my life.

I’ve been thinking about how different the workforce is today compared to 20, 30, 40 years ago. My current role seems to be consumed with having to address workplace drama, hiring  and retention of employees. As much as I try, I just can’t understand the attitudes I observe. And while I’m at it, “Get off my lawn”.

I’ve been thinking about the fun I will have this afternoon when Elissa brings the kids to meet me in the parking lot at the end of the runway at Aiken Regional Airport for our second annual “Watch The Corporate Jets land/take off With Masters Patrons With Papa” event and the wonderful memories that day helped me recall.

I’ve been thinking about how quickly the days, weeks, months and years seem to be passing by and wondering how many I have left?

I’ve been thinking about Pascal’s Wager.

Sometimes, I just think too much.
