I like this app. I love that it shows you whether you are headed North, South, East, West, etc in Fly Mode. It’s very handy for knowing what shots you’ve taken particularly on missions requesting cardinal shots. I also love that you have the ability to upload content to DroneBase from within the app. As someone who has moved over to just having an iPhone and an iPad Pro, this is what makes taking missions possible for me as the website does not work with iPads last I checked. However there is substantial room for improvement in areas such as gimbal control from within flight mode. This is particularly needed for higher altitude shots where having the camera pointed straight ahead doesn’t work. You either can’t get the shot or you’re backing away from an object so much so that potentially you are over Traffic or people which for Part 107 License holders is a Part 107 violation without a waiver. I find the lack of ability to know whether your drone has set a home location from within flight mode or even the ability to “flip that switch” if needed to be discomforting as well. There is a ton of potential in DroneBase to be a sort of Lyft for drone pilots type of gig if they can flesh out this app with arguably needed functionality, particularly in flight mode. Non-client missions to be a better source of income. Finally, DroneBase needs to better vet locations for compatibility with current regulations instead of sending pilots out to sites to figure it out and potentially come home at a loss because the mission wasn’t feasible without risking breaking or breaking the regulations the FAA has put in place.

The app is pretty cool, however the procedure they have started following is horrible. They pushed a mission out for $140, after I accepted the mission, it changed to $70 and changed the fly time. I had reached out to them about the difference and they said it was a “technical error” meaning they messed up. I was still willing to do the mission but had requested it have the original date. They confirmed that the mission got rescheduled to the original date. I had to drive 45 min to do the mission. When I went to “check in” for the mission it wasn’t there in the app, but since they said they were having “technical difficulties” I had figured something was wrong, and continued to fly. I should mention I did reach out to them about the mission not being in the app anymore before flying and they didn’t respond, so since I had the location and shot list, I flew it. Come to find out, they had cancelled the mission without notifying me, and when I finally got a hold of them, they tried to putting it all back on me. Once I showed them all the email proof that they confirmed the mission for me and there was no correspondence about it being cancelled they stopped replying and did t pay me anything for the travel. Honestly I get drone jobs by myself as much as they put out, and I charge around $250 for the same jobs these guys are paying $70 for. If you’re really needing money, or just doing it as a hobby, it’s great, but if you want to make some money, honestly just post on social you do drone work, and you can triple you’re income and cut out the middle man.

Ive done about 65 jobs for these people. At the time, I was in desperate need and got lucky they just so happened to be posting jobs in NYC area. Here is my issue, these people will send you anywhere! It does not matter to them whether the airspace is restricted or not, in fact they do not check. They actually leave it up to the pilot to find out himself and potentially get in trouble. Never received a permit for any site. why? because a permit cost $150 and these guys pay $50 to $150 per job if you’re lucky. Here is the second biggest problem.. insurance companies hire these people to secretly take photos! This one almost got me arrested! They sent me to a ladies house on private property to take photos, this lady came out yelling threatening to call the cops on me! And im like “mam im the pilot from Dronebase! (Which was the base at the time) she was very confused, made me delete all the photos and told me get off the property asap. One time i emailed them about nee drone laws in nyc.. that was the last job I ever got 😂😭😂😭😂. You cannot be aware or question when working for dronebase they will block you. Worst company I ever worked for. Very nice app, very unique business for my area. But terrible experience. I will never go back
Good for practice
ReallyY.
Ok I’ve been using Dronebase for about a year now. I started out just doing simple flights to grab pictures of buildings and have expanded to doing pano and ortho shots in the last month or two. You expand your knowledge and training level as you go.The app is nice and I receive a good 4 to 6 missions I can do per month. I think it really depends on where you live. Can I live off it? No, but it’s nice learning some of the ins and outs of the drone industry. Now they have slowed payments too.... by a lot. I used to do a job and get paid by the next week. My last job was completed by me last Tuesday, passed by Dronebase last Friday, and I won’t see payment until the Monday after this next week. So in total close to a 3 week wait for payment. In all not a bad app for finding drone work, just don’t go thinking you’ll be able to quit your day job with it. Know what you’re getting into. They seem to only accept DJI drones and I would recommend having at least a Mavic 2, or Phantom 4 to start using this app.
