They labour in the darkest hours of the night, deep in the forests of the Nations’ territories. When the lantern of the moon is dim, when stars hide behind heavy clouds, only then do they descend from the sky, to harvest.
The Harvesters! They cross far-away uncharted galaxies in ships, travelling at speeds scientists of this world cannot even fathom. They come, not to harm the human population of Mother Earth but to harvest what is found in great abundance where trees live. The Harvesters come to our lands, to take away only what will not be missed by neither man nor beast.
It is the leaves of autumn, from the lands in the northern areas of Turtle Island that the Harvesters travel so far to retrieve. Though they have been harvesting the leaves in Algonquin Territory for thousands of years, human eyes have never beheld the faces of these gentle beings. Only deer, racoons and other four-legged, the winged too, know the Harvesters and have no fear of them. Tree spirit also has no fear of the Harvesters for always, before the harvest of leaves begins, an offering of tobacco is made, something of respect the Harvesters do, learned by observing the Indigenous Peoples here. To bestow honour for all which nourishes their bodies, is the way of life in the world where the Harvesters live.
The leaves of the maple, birch, oak and poplar trees are those most sought after by the Harvesters, a basic food source to feed their population on the planet where they have lived for millions of years. From the maple leaves they learn about sweetness, from the birch: ingenuity, from the oak: strength, from the poplars: song! They prepare the leaves in varying ways before joyfully consuming them at their feasting times.
The harvest occurs in autumn after the leaves regretfully, bid farewell to the relationship they had with the life-giving waters sustaining them since the leaves first appeared on tree branches as tiny buds. Water is life and when it is no longer present in the body of all living things, end of life occurs. The same is true for the leaves attached to the trees in the forests of our territories. The leaves, because of autumn’s colder temperatures, lose their ability to keep water moving within them. Their green colour slowly gives way, replaced by bright colours: orange, red, yellow. The loss of water weakens the leaf, it can no longer stay on the branch. It is taken by the wind and falls to find a resting place on the land.
The Harvesters learned in their initial exploratory visits here at a time even before human beings first walked the Earth that the leaves, when still on the branches of the tree would be far too difficult to gather, too time consuming. Harvesting the leaves from the forest floor after motorless, powerful, noiseless fans have brought the leaves to natural forest clearings, where a quick harvest of them takes place.
When dinosaurs were grazing on lush greenery on this planet, the Harvesters were much further advanced in technology even back then, than the tech found in our world today. The Harvesters didn’t evolve into a world of intelligence. In their world, it has always been present. Intelligence and true things of wisdom and common sense are as much part of their being as the ability to express things of ‘love’ is alive in the human heart. The Harvesters chose to develop technology only in the areas where lives would be saved, such as in medical procedures and doing all possible in amplifying practices supporting all life on their planet. They use technology to develop safer and better means of pollution-free transportation, to deliver cargo from one point to another, swiftly and hazard-free.
Technology is generated to make all their inhabitants feel equal to the others around them. They strive always to nurture the ability to process and deal with troubling circumstances, as only a team dedicated to wellness for all would. None of their populations ever feels alone when they reach out for support. On their planet there is no word for ‘war’, for they have never known the need for it. ‘Hate’ does not exist in their world. Crime is unknown to them, only peace and tranquility for all life is acceptable. Lies are not told. The Harvesters, in their commitment to peace and kindness, rejected all that was not healthy in what technology can do and developed only what brought about unconditional support for one another. The Harvesters live in such a way where no worries of falling prey to the powerful seduction powers of what is known on this planet as ‘The Almighty Dollar’, for things that define wealth are wholly and completely rejected by them.
The Harvesters come here to harvest leaves, taking only what they need, always leaving behind what the land needs to sustain itself. They also harvest secretly, from other planets throughout the galaxies, taking only what can be spared from them without bringing dire consequences for the planet’s inhabitants. The Harvesters are beings who have only ever known kindness, who are always in control of their emotions. They renounce the violence they see occurring in some of the planets they visit. They have the ability to feel pity and carry sadness inside of them for creatures who kill and maim each other for any number of foolish reasons. They know that human beings are killing their own home, the Earth, something the Harvesters have seen happen on other planets over the thousands of years of their universal travels. It is something they don’t have the ability to comprehend. To kill what is present allowing you to live, is impossible for the Harvesters to understand.
The Harvesters believe it is not too late to save this planet. It is not the world leaders who can save the waters of our planet, it is the people! Only the people can do what needs to be done to save planet Earth from dying. But will they act? The Harvesters hope they do.
