    What Causes Flight Cancellations?

Flight cancellations occur when an airline experiences technical faults, air traffic control congestion, crew or staffing shortages, severe weather conditions ,or security threats. These disruptions can result in a domino effect across the network, with cascading delays resulting in airlines needing to cancel flights in a bid to maange its system capacity and fleet distribution. The most common causes for flight cancellations can stem from weather, such as thunderstorms, hurricanes, or snow and fo,g causing issues for pilots being able to navigate planes safely. Additionally, air carrier issues, such as circumstances within the airline's direct control, can be sudden mechanical problems, maintenance, or delays, plus crew shortages, such as flight attendants or pilots exceeding the strict legal limits on their maximum flying hours. Broader air traffic control constraints, such as high traffic volumes, congestion,or ground delays, can also influence flight cancellations. What other f

    What Causes Flight Delays?

Flight delays are common due to late arriving aircraft, changing weather conditions, air traffic control congestion or challenges, mechanical or staffing shortages. Depending on the length of a delay and whether it is under their control, airlines may offer food, water, or rebooking onto another flight. There are several reasons as to why flight delays happen, the most common is due to the late arrival of an incoming aircraft, which plays as a domino effect from flight to flight. This is the single largest contributor to most flight delays. Other factors that can influence delays are weather, such as thunderstorms, heavy winds, or fog, which can result in ground stops or runway restrictions. Airline operations also influence flight delays, due to unexpected maintenance issues, crew duty time limits or ground handling delays which can hold it back at the gate. This got me thinking, what is the longest flight delay you have experienced? Let us know in the comments.

Why Do Experienced Pilots Make Surprisingly Human Errors?

There is a common assumption in aviation that experience eventually eliminates mistakes, that once a pilot has enough hours, errors become rare or even disappear altogether. In reality, experience changes the type of errors that occur, not the fact that errors occur at all. Even highly experienced pilots can make mistakes, and when they do, it is rarely due to a lack of knowledge or skill. It is usually the result of how the human brain behaves under workload, repetition, and changing conditions. A key factor is something known as automation expectation. Modern aircraft are highly automated, especially in the cruise phase. Pilots may spend long periods monitoring systems rather than actively manipulating controls. Over time, this can lead to a subtle shift where the brain begins to assume systems are behaving as expected, rather than actively verifying every step in detail. This is where small errors can enter, not because the pilot does not understand the system, but because the sys

Should Some Airports Have Exclusive Rights For International Operations?

Montreal's Metropolitan Airport recently opened a new terminal, and Porter Airlines launched an impressive 11 services within the first week. However, rather interestingly, all these services were domestic routes within Canada because the airport cannot handle international traffic. The primary reason behind this is the fact that the larger and primary airport of the city, Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL), has an 'international flight exclusivity clause' within its lease agreements, which prevents any other airport within the Montreal area from handling international services. Now, the Canadian Competition Bureau has published on its website that it is against such exclusivity clauses, as it reduces competition within the market, which impacts the available options passengers would have. What are your thoughts on this matter? Can you think of any advantages the passengers might have from an airport having such exclusivity? Are you for or against these exclusivity rights?

United Airlines’ CEO Slams Rolls-Royce, Says It Only Wins Orders Due To An Airbus A350 Monopoly

United Airlines' Airbus A350 order has turned into one of the more drawn-out and contested widebody commitments in recent aviation history. While the order was originally placed in 2009 for 25 aircraft as part of a long-haul fleet renewal strategy, United later upsized it to 45 examples of the A350-900.

The Surprising Reason the Douglas DC-8 Outlasted the Boeing 707

When Samaritan’s Purse retired its McDonnell Douglas DC-8 freighter N782SP after a final humanitarian mission to Jamaica in late 2025, aviation lost more than just another aging cargo aircraft. The retirement marked the near-complete end of the first-generation jetliner era, a period when four-engine aircraft symbolized the future of global aviation. Built on December 24, 1968, the aircraft accumulated nearly 99,000 flight hours across a 57-year lifespan. So in this video, we take a look at why the Douglas DC-8 outlasted the Boeing 707 by decades, how smart engineering decisions helped keep it flying long after its competitors disappeared, and why one of aviation’s oldest jetliners became an unlikely symbol of endurance.
